Is the Curfew for Minors Still in Effect?
Dear Editor,
The government’s curfew for minors, set from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., was introduced to address youth loitering and promote safety. However, during the recent Christmas and New Year holiday season, I noticed many minors loitering on the streets well past curfew hours, raising concerns about the enforcement of this important measure.
Is the curfew still in effect, or has it been temporarily relaxed? If it remains active, what steps are being taken to ensure minors comply, especially during festive periods when late-night gatherings are more common?
This curfew was intended to protect our young people and discourage anti-social behavior, but its success depends on consistent enforcement. I urge the authorities to clarify its current status and take additional measures to monitor compliance, particularly during high-traffic times like the holidays.
A clear explanation and visible action from the relevant officials would reassure the public that the safety of our youth remains a top priority.
Sincerely,
Single Gay Man

A gay man with a straight (and relevant) question! Who are the officials appointed to oversee this program, if any? This legislation seems to have been all show no substance
Curfew on paper but not in practice. This is usually how a lot of things are “enforced” or not enforced in this country. That’s how we can have teenagers still wondering off even as of recently. Grateful and thankful that the individual was found in one piece.
I am against the curfew and would be more so on holidays like Christmas eve, New Years eve, etcetera.
There should not have been no statute on this but executive orders used on specific days, if you will utilize curfews.
We need to stay introduce our children to imprisonment but teach them to be responsible. Yours sincerely social and behavioral scientist.
Like many laws in Antigua they are just on paper. Enforcement only happens as a reflex action and then is soon forgotten. We have a waste of time Minister of Police and a waste of space Commissioner, what do we reallt expect? Nothing will ever change in this country.
There are several reasons why this law is not enforced.
1) Those in authority are reactive- no planning, no consultation , which leads to no implementation on almost everything.
2) in the case of delinquencies they have no proper place to put them . What has become of the court order to have a safer place then 1735 .
3) Credit to the police- during this season, we had increased police presence, even the commissioner and other top boss were out .
4) The police had to use their discretion it time like these – it’s the time of year when we give our children some leverage. I must also state that I was impressed in general with their behavior. I saw and heard of no violence
I am sure that you did not see these Youths misbehaving in any manner, what is your concern ? Is it that you have a dislike for our young people, it’s Christmas, and we all do realise that there are so much activities for them to attend, perhaps they were coming from church.
Give the Youths a chance, if you didn’t know, this curfew is difficult to maintain and was ridiculous in the first place to be made Lawful. Not all our Young people are Criminals as you may be thinking.
Time for you to think straight and understand that youths will be youths wherever you may go, and that they need to have their freedom and not to be hunted down by police and soldiers on sight.
Most of them looking older than their ages
Makes not much sense, they can do stupid things all day long.
