24. The other day, 3 Jamaican young men passed me in town. Two were wearing mostly black with black tams on their heads. The third was in dark clothes – not quite black. He was playing loud gangster dancehall music about gunshots on some little radio he had on him. They were walking quite boldly through town with this intimidating music playing. That is way more concerning to me. 26. I agree that that sort of dressing is distasteful and perhaps inappropriate. We generally understand that tourists are on vacation so we don’t expect them to dress normally while here whereas people who live here would normally be expected to dress appropriately for the location that they are in as in any country. However, I hesitate to judge people because there are always underlying factors in poor societies e.g. perhaps they cannot afford better clothing or perhaps no one is really selling better clothing… If you go to town, most people either sell beach wear or expensive fancy formal wear. Where are the stores selling basic affordable casual wear? Such clothes are very hard to find. Most business people in this country seem to assume that everyone wants to dress up in expensive clothes all the time. In other countries their largest stores sell affordable basic items. Even the vendors by the market here sell expensive brand-name clothing more expensive than the stores in town. The only cheap clothing are the cheap tights and camisoles that the Chinese stores sell. So, perhaps that is what they can afford or they just refuse to waste their dollars on higher priced clothing? Before judging people, let us ask ourselves, have we as a society made it easy or convenient for them to do any better?
