Dear Editor,
Working in immigration is a bittersweet experience. I love my job—meeting new people, learning about different cultures, and playing a role in protecting our country’s borders. However, the reality within our department is troubling, and the public needs to be aware of the struggles we face daily.
For over 15 years, I have watched the same cycle repeat itself. When problems arise, the solution is always to hire new officers. This might address 5% of the issues, but before long, these new officers uncover the long-standing problems that have been swept under the rug, and we find ourselves right back at square one. Immigration needs real help—proper guidance and leadership from those at the top.
Officers, particularly those stationed at the airport, are overworked and exhausted. The department is in chaos, with infighting among staff, and the situation worsens by the day.
The minister, the chief, and senior officials remain disconnected from the reality on the ground. They conduct no meaningful interviews, ask no questions, and instead resort to anger and victimization.
Rather than strengthening and improving the department, leadership is distracted by everything but the core mission—securing our borders. Officers are mistreated, and the job has become more about politics than public service. If you stand up for yourself or fall out of favor, you become a target. Promotions and opportunities are granted based on personal connections rather than merit.
Basic necessities are being ignored. Officers have gone years without receiving new uniforms, and new recruits are not even properly equipped to carry out their duties. Instead of addressing these major concerns, management is preoccupied with minor, trivial issues that do nothing to improve efficiency or morale.
Poor leadership has led to ineffective communication, micromanagement, silencing of officers, and outright belittlement. This toxic work environment has resulted in decreased productivity and an increase in sick calls. Yet, rather than focusing on solutions, leadership resorts to threats—officers face the risk of being fired or transferred at the minister’s discretion. This approach is not only unfair but counterproductive.
Immigration officers deserve better. We need proper leadership, fair treatment, and the tools to do our jobs effectively. It is time for real change before the department collapses under the weight of its unresolved issues.
A Concerned Immigration Officer

Disconnection from the negativity , chaos and infighting among staff has nothing to do with leadership. It is called protecting your peace. You guys are not children…you are adults , therefore the staff is toxic and disgusting and a bunch of time wasters . Leave leadership out of your toxic mess …it is an International airport …..you can tell visitors not to come ..well leave the job ….the officers are lazy…..on a shift they complaining…just send in the planes without landing …you guys not making any sense now.
I concur 100% with the writer of this article. Having been in the department for 25 plus years. The problems outlined by the writer are true and spot on. I will also add the politics plaguing the the department which is so unbearable, friend and company, favoritism, keep down is the norm if you are an outdpoken person. I must also add interference by the minister when carrying out immigration duties.

@Disgusting you are the biggest problem in the department. Seems like the article burning your toes.
@Disgusting. It’s people like you in leadership position why the Immigration Department is the way it is today and from eons ago. It is your pure arrogance, incompetence, insensitivity to the needs and concerns of the staff at the airport and your refusal to listen to great ideas and suggestions put forward by the staff for the betterment of the Department.
Almost sounds like the confusion in UPP
This situation is not unique to immigration alone.. customs, police, agriculture. All over even in political parties.
Wonder why persons are afraid to put their names.
Disgusting are you
The Station Chief who always on sick leave and vex when his staff does the same?
The OIC that knows nothing?
The Senior Supervisor who is petty?
The Senior Supervisor who got a promotion based on being the OIC puppet?
Disgusting state your name now.
For an outsider like me, who have no idea what goes on in that Department, l will give very little credence to that article
Here’s why.
Letter states that their solution to solving problems is to hire more staff, and writer opined that this only solves 5% of the problems. But the very next paragraph, first issue you stated. Is that Officers are over worked. Surely new staff will help much more than 5%.
No new uniforms for years. Really. You should be praise for taking such great care of the old ones you have. But I will say that is not a fault of your bosses. Fault of Government. Most uniformed departments in Antigua has that issue. We can all tell by seeing them on the streets. Traffic Wardens seems to be most in need of new uniforms, followed by Fire then Police. Immigration, customs and nurses to me usually, and in most cases seems to have good uniforms. Maybe those of Immigration are of better quality and last longer.
Maybe there are indeed issues at immigration, but this letter did not do a good job of getting my attention.
Ron you’re right… you’re and outside so stay outside because out of everything, you only gathered the uniform issue. Typical.
A bunch of ass kissers in this department! Overworking airport staff for years! In stead of rotating them when the time comes, then you label them as lazy because they’re overworked and won’t suck up to you.
Station chiefs come to work as they please.
OIC runs around strutting her heels like a lunatic.
Chief who is never around and didn’t even introduce herself to the new batch of officers, 8 months later and they still haven’t met her.
Illegal work schedules having officers tired.
Denials that are over looked because of links.
Supervisors belittling and disrespecting officers. Day offs and vacations that you are entitled to but can’t ask for.
Let’s not talk about the CSR’s that was overlooked, while the minister hired 40+ officers ! Who are lazy and up to this day doesn’t know how to do the work. How is that fair ?! That’s why the department is running in shambles ! None sorry Dey
🤣🤣🤣🤣
@officer9 if you as a CSR was really capable of doing the job then you would’ve been selected with the rest CSR’s that were promoted… get rid of the bitterness in your chest and try again with the next batch😘 don’t you have the line to run right now? BYE!
@ disgusted you just proved the point of the whole article.
You care zero for staff and I can guarantee victimization of staff because of this article.
Aru nah lob nonbady
@ officer 9 so your gripe is with the new officers rather than the Hr personell that over looked you?
You’re bitter and badmine.
You Immigration officers seems to be bitter like the UPP, ah them send are you . Where that concerned Immigration Officer was for 15 years. Rather than bringing these issues to the public have you ever sort to converse with the head of the deparment on these issues, why only now after 15 years and could you be apart of the problem? I have a daughter who works in that deparment and during conversation she would allude her disrespectful coworkers who want to do as them like, they wear the shortest and tightest skirts and pants, them lazy and don’t want the work to do and her exhaustion due to sick calls. Some of y’all that talking nah fit to be in that deparment y’all need to be sent to cook’s dump some of al you don’t deserve to be Immigration Officers y’all walk on the street like prostitutes.
CSR don’t let these new officers that can’t even fold a Dec properly make you feel bad.
Personally I would get rid of 95% of those new officers. You all bring nothing to the table but laziness and sick calls.
Concerned Immigration Officer your recent letter and the issues you raised. It prompts several questions: Where have you been for the past 15 years? Instead of bringing these issues to public attention, have you made efforts to engage with leadership within your department? Could it be that you were, in some way, part of the problem and if so what Whas prompted your concerns to surface now? I have a daughter who works in that deparment and through out conversations, l has become clear that there are significant morale issues among staff. She offen describe her colleagues as disrespectful and noted that some choose to wear the shortest and tightest clothing, which detracts from a professional atmosphere.
Furthermore, she has mentioned a troubling trend of excessive absenteeism due to sick calls, which ultimately affects the department’s performance and morale. Frankly speaking some of you deserve to be at cooks dump. Y’all dress like prostitutes on the job. “I come through frequently, so I feel confident in expressing my observations. You concerned Immigration Officer I was also told that the deparment is now taking steps to address issues of habitual sick calls, disrespectful behavior and underperformance and you maybe in that category so you’re bitter.
A former Immigration Officer, it is distasteful of the behavior as immigration officers. What message are you sending to the public that you are severe? Even it there are things of concern, there are other ways that it can be dealt with. You guys are really bitter. What’s the need for personalizing and the attacking of imindividuals. I can tell who you are from your shallow writing and expression. Immigration VCBIA, how many ass you have kissed and licked for promotion in the past, and because of your lack of knowledge and incompetence, you didn’t make the grade, also tell the public that you tried your front too and not even that worked you worth noting. Bad mine, jealousy, envy, and covetousness eating all you all like cancer. You are involving the Chief, Station Chief, and OIC. Ah, them mine tell you to give away you PORKY AND NAH GET THE PROMOTION. Y’all need to stop it. You of all persons talking about overworked staff you lazy as he’ll that why you try other methods but you hole nah good. Go and suck an egg now.🥚When y’all talking about people talk about that. Bunch a bitches.
