LETTER: Complacency in St Peter By-Election Campaigning?

Dear Editor,

With the St Peter by-election scheduled for January 14, one would expect a flurry of campaigning from the major political parties. Yet, the silence is deafening—no radio ads, no TV ads, no social media outreach, and no visible signs of money being spent to engage voters.

Rawdon Turner, the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) candidate, has been widely touted as the frontrunner. However, this apparent lack of campaigning raises questions: Is the ABLP taking this election for granted?

Are they assuming a victory without putting in the effort to connect with the electorate?

Meanwhile, George Wehner of the United Progressive Party (UPP) could exploit this complacency. While the UPP has historically faced challenges in this constituency, a surprise victory is not impossible if Turner’s campaign remains inactive.

Low voter turnout, likely due to the absence of Independent MP Asot Michael, further complicates the dynamics, creating an opening for unexpected results.

Elections are about more than just name recognition—they’re about earning the confidence of the people. The absence of visible campaigning suggests a disregard for the importance of engaging the community.

St Peter’s voters deserve a robust effort from both candidates to address their concerns and outline clear visions for the constituency’s future.

With less than a month to go, it’s time for the candidates to step up. Campaigning isn’t just tradition—it’s a necessity for democracy.

Sincerely,
Pharo

  1. The ablp candidate knows the people of st.peters are for sale, so why waste time when as little as 50.00 $ does it, plus a ham and turkey was just given the the hungry, you guys are not aware how lowly gaston think of you’ll, have some pride

  2. Here comes another pot stirrer trying to use subtle double-talk to confuse, incite, and immobilize the residents and voters of the St. Peter Constituency. That’s the level of respect that they and their kind have for the electorate. They think that we are all so ignorant and under-educated that they could feed us poison and lies and think that we will just gobble them all up. People of the St. Peter Constituency, if you had/have genuine love for the late MP, you would kick the useless UPP back to the PIT from whence they came. Don’t allow this gun toting, power hungry traitor to ever get a taste of governance of this country, especially Antigua, especially the Constituency of St Peter.
