LETTER: Can anything good come from Gray’s Farm?

5

Dear Editor,

Last week, I had tuned into one of JO -JO’s sports program and to say the least, I was touched & impressed with an interview I heard from a former player of Empire, whose name I cannot remember.

The interviewee was quite eloquent.

However, what peeked my interest was how the organization that he was representing started & the organization’s objectives.

If I can recall, the former player said he was representing the Empire Former Players & Fans Association – EFPFA.

He further indicated that the association is made up of former fans & players of Empire who live in Antigua & also in the diaspora.

He then highlighted that the founder of the association, Mr.Ronald Gordon who resides in the US & once played for Empire, came home for vacation & was surprisingly shock to learn that a former teammate of his, now lives in a nursing home due to minimal support from friends & families.

Immediately, the teammate’s condition  prompted the founder to think that it is a wise idea to round up several former players of Empire & have them commit themselves as an association & start an outreach program to assist any former player or fan of Empire who have now fallen on hard times.

Interestingly, the Gray’s Green community has always been stigmatized.

Hence,  many think that good things cannot come from Gray’s Farm.

Yet, time after time, the residents of that community have proven the masses wrong.

EFPFA has risen to the occasion and is now proving to the masses that they are wrong once again.

As a NGO & a non profiting organization who is just about 3 years old, I think EFPFA have really done very  well so far & is definitely doing the community of Gray’s Green extremely proud.

It is very evident that they are expecting to do a lot more.

The images on their Face Book page is a sure testimony…..

Infact, their FB page displays the members of the association

1.  Giving gift baskets to the sick & the shut in

2. Giving a wheelchair to a handicap

3. Giving a stove to a past player

4. Giving financial assistance towards funeral expenses of a fallen player

5. Offering a Christmas luncheon to the patients & staff of the Fiennes Institute

6. Recognizing some ladies on mother’s day as the matriarchs of Empire.

From the interview it was nice to understand that the association has been assisted by a few of the local businesses within the community including one or two externally. Unity always builds strength.

Although I am not from the Gray’s Green area I will be happy if EFPFA can consider me as a prospective member. I certainly endorse what they are doing.

It is a great initiative & is surely beneficial to the Gray’s Green community.

I certainly wish EFPFA the best for their future endeavors and as the organization grows from strength to strength, I do hope that their upcoming week of activities starting from Aug 6 to Aug 12 will definitely be a success.

  1. Grays Farm have produced Doctors, lawyers, Nurses, Athletes, Teachers, Queens, Kings, Empire, Halcyon, Accountants etc etc. They can and are able to compete on the world stage. Thumbs up to EFPFA…. This is a great initiative the you guys are doing…. Keep it up!!

  2. The People of the #Mud, usually referred to as ‘ghetto’(a state of mind) are like the Lotus Flower, one of the main representation of life’s flora and fauna. The Lotus Flower thrives in muddy waters, yet, those same muddy waters cannot be reabsorbed by the plant after its #ROOTS has filtered and broken down the toxins which live in thrive in the #MUD.

  3. Grays Farm has the best food I’ve ever tasted in all of Antigua..and take that from someone who travels a lot and have eating in many restaurants on my travels( and yes I tip well).

That lady with the restaurant on the corner that cook in that shop in the middle of grays Farm, has the best food bar none . Her steam fish is to die for. And then there is another lady that cooks from her home as a side gig, that’s another woman food that I have to have when I visit, in fact I’m going there tomorrow with my buddy to eat, since I’m on island for a few weeks.

So yes, many good has come from grays Farm.
