Dear Editor,
I must be living under a rock because I’ve recently noticed a curious trend sweeping the streets of Antigua and Barbuda—young men strutting around town in bonnets!
Yes, bonnets, those delightful headpieces traditionally reserved for women trying to keep their hairdo intact at home while they binge-watch their favorite shows in pajamas.
Now, don’t get me wrong; I’ve always admired a good hair accessory.
But when I see a young lad in a bonnet, I can’t help but think he’s either super committed to keeping his curls crispy or he’s just auditioning for the role of “Most Confused Fashionista of 2025.”
I mean, did I miss a memo? Is there a trendy new hair-care regime that I should know about? Some revolutionary hair product that’s making its way to the male grooming aisle?
Are bonnets now the official headgear for navigating life’s daily tasks like grocery shopping or waiting in line for a bank?
Whatever the case may be, I’m genuinely curious! Is there a secret Bonnet Society I’m unaware of? A new fashion manifesto where men everywhere are encouraged to flaunt their inner inch of flair?
So, educate me, please! I’m not throwing shade; I’m just attempting to understand what on earth is happening. This could be the next big thing, and I don’t want to be the one caught without a bonnet or two when the trend really takes off!
Fashionably confused

It’s a trend that is just touching the island because boys here rock bonnets. It’s a trend that was followed when the growing out of their hair started. My three sons love and embrace their natural fro!! Their proud to rock their fro and don’t want to cut it ( they have phases these kids lol) so to keep their hair protected the bonnet was born to them
Honestly, I don’t see the big deal.
I’ve started buying bonnets for my son, and it’s helped a lot with keeping his curls neat. What’s wrong with that?
People need to stop gendering everything. It’s a piece of cloth, not a lifestyle choice.
As a dad with locs, I’ve been wearing bonnets for years at night.
Sounds like another antiman trend to me!
Hmmmmmmmm
Why are we so quick to make harmless things controversial?
I actually saw a group of boys at the bus stop rocking bonnets last week.
My nephew wears his bonnet proudly.
This isn’t a “feminine” or “masculine” thing
From Cups to Bonnets, Antiguans have a major problem with everything a person do in their everyday life. How a man wearing a bonnet becomes your problem? everyone has their ways of doing different things so i don’t see your problem here.
It’s actually about hair protection. A lot of guys with natural hair or locs are wearing bonnets to keep moisture in and breakage out. Not just fashion, function.
I like this article, it is funny. But I do understand the practicality of such head gear. I also understand how it was usually worn.
Just the other day I asked someone, how does a perfume know it is on a woman or man? My point is, it smells good, I am using that perfume/cologne. I do not care if it says for man or woman.
Same thing with the head gear, if it is serving your purpose, then use it.
My ski-mask help me in the hot Antigua sun, protects my highly sensitive skin, help me deal with that socially awkward feeling I may or not have, help me hide from folks who do not want to know I exist.
Sometimes you have to use what you have to use as long as you are not hurting anyone, yourself, etcetera.
They have time to sit down for 4 hours and plait hair and the girls are beating them in school. They are wearing pink school bags, and tight pants. What next…panties? O no…we would probably have seen that the way they wear their pants these days. I don’t know what’s wrong being masculine these days.
Nothing to eat? They will eat the bonnets. I wondered why these young boys without locks were wearing these. Sommadem looks handsome in it. wahhhhhhhhh
ANTIGUANS ARE IDIOTS, YALL AINT GONNA HAVE NOTHING TO EAT IN A FEW WEEKS AND THIS IS WHAT YALL WORRY ABOUT????
The so call LGBT thing has normalized unisex clothing and style for men, before time a lady pants at the knees now man wearing pants cut at the knees and pants down, but who knows the hoodie shirt now this bonnet seems to fall into the category of been more obscure or hiding there identity because of criminal intentions.
Antigua people always want to be trendy..
Always want to Keep up with the Kardashians😁
Too much sweetness a go on here, talking bout protecting natural fro. Then here comes one with wearing what ever scent smells best on him, no matter if it specifically says female, it’s as if we are grooming our boys to be a bunch a Batty Boys.
Soon from now parents gonna have trouble identifying who is their little boy for girl sitting around the dinner table.
Soon the will use somekind of tampons too..just to protect they SUSPECT SAUSAGE for whatsoever reason.
Woke at the best
After reading all the comments hear are some questions;
Someone said it’s a piece of cloth. If bras become fashionable for boys will that opinion remain?
Someone spoke about fragrances if makeup becomes fashionable for boys will that fragrance argument hold up?
I think there is solid reason why there male items and female items from birth. When mothers purchase female items for their sons, they are 8ndeed contributing to sissyfying of the boys.
You guys are cracking me up ha ha ha ha ha. I needed the laugh. I am tremendously over worked and mentally drained from this intense immigration law enforcement. Clients are scared, worried, and that means I get no break. But this article made me laugh and more so the comments comparing fragrance (oil, perfume, collogne) to make-up ha ha ha ha ha ha. Then went as far as bras, even I am against a man wearing a bra. I am not 100% against the head covering but 100% against men wearing panties or thongs or bras, I mean men men but gay men can wear whatever they want. I literally have zero rights telling you what to wear and I respect that. It is not something I want you to wear but it is not my business.
Sit here at 2am wondering if no one ever address serious matters. This bonnet make some of these men look very much like females. What happen to durags? They stop selling them for men?
I guess is bonnet and the tams that look like dog bite them. What’s next rollers?
The Chinese are saying:”Thank God for Black Peoples”
Prices are tripling from bleaching cream to bonnets due to tariffs and Port Duties.
Maybe they can be made locally. What a sad set of people?
Young boys started showing their underwear in public, to other men, because the girls are not impressed by a man’s ass. Then it was tights, tighter than the women. Then Mickey Mouse hair. Now bonnets. Not to worry, it will be bra and panties next, and with the current ‘woke’ culture, it will be fine. We are just raising the next generation of batty-men.
@faithful national. Sissy? Really? Hahaha. You are so messy.
So a chef hat makes a man look like a sissy?
Adorned “headgears” from crowns to warriors helmets to ceremonial headdresses made to mimic nature have always been a part of HUEman culture. You can tell whsr tribe or culture one celebrated by their HEADGEAR or head to hair to neck to body are all adorned.
Outside of [locks] which the Rastafarian culture emulated from Centuries old Indian cultures and the indoctrination through modern day re-legion, the Afro and other versions, of head adornment’s which morphed into hair styles became the norm and accepted styles which BLACK PEOPLE of African Descent in the Western Hemisphere considered their “norms.”
The #DO_RAG, the handkerchief, stocking caps, tams, knitted bonnets worn by Rastas, the wrapping of cloth around the head by some Rastas lall fall under the category of headgears. Therefore, why single out a piece cloth with an elastic to hold it in place, a bonnet?
The problem here is NOT the bonnet, the problem is perception of what a “bonnet” is supposed to stand for.
As to the bra argument, unless hormones are going to instantly grow breast, or implants are used to look like breast, the same argument can be used for briefs vs boxers vs loin cloth vs bare ass, since, a brief is panty cut slightly different and made from different materials, at times. A boxer short is simply Grannie big bag draws with your size to fit.
As for cologne and perfume, they come from plant oils or synthetic versions, and again, depending on which culture of HUEmanity influenced one’s thought process the aromas are interchangeable and interpreted differently.
If anyone uses SOAP, they’re filled with a mixture of fragrances to non at all. U can wash U kin wid SOAP BUSH from the Maubi Tree or cassi juice!
As far as clothes go, that too has its perceptions…
If one walks around in just a loin cloth what does that make them?
If a Scot wearing a Skirt/Kilt is seen walking through Antigua daily, and it becomes trendy like polyester suits and ties will the Scots be considered “antimen?”
If on certain occasions, the Muslim men in Antigua begins to wear long blouse/shirt to their ankles Will Antigua consider them “antimen?”
Years ago, many thought, that all chefs were antimen because real men don’t cook.
Real men don’t clean their house nor wash their clothes but, they’ll SPIT SHINE the metal on a car, van or bus.
Damn where is my KNITTED 🔴🌝🌳knitted Rasta bonnet to cover and hold these long 40”locks in place, or better yet, let me just wrapped the locks with a black cloth with a twisted peak at the top, and bop through the city.
As long as you know yourself FASHION & STYLES can never make nor break you.

Well analyzed by @Vere C Edwards. Thank you.
Once you know yourself and God knows your heart, you can wear anything you want. Nobody should care what other people think of them. Some people always projecting their insecurities unto others. Guys wear your Bonnets if that’s what you want to do.

So is only women that have hair that needs to be protected? Stupes. Not all boys have short hair fit for a du-rag.
Let people live their lives, as long as they’re not endangering anyone else
