I am calling on the Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) to address a serious issue affecting consumers damages to household appliances caused by low voltage, which was confirmed by APUA’s own personnel in my case.
Over a month ago, I reported the matter to APUA and submitted all necessary details. Since then, I have received no acknowledgement, no update, and no explanation. A follow-up email sent three days ago was also ignored.
This level of disregard for paying customers is unacceptable. When the utility’s own failure leads to damage, customers deserve communication, accountability, and fair compensation not silence.
I am sharing this publicly because I believe I am not alone. Many households rely on APUA for essential services, and if others have experienced similar low voltage issues, their voices deserve to be heard as well.
APUA must take responsibility, improve its response to customers, and restore public trust. Silence is not an acceptable response from a public utility

The only thing I will say on this one is that APUA should extricate itself from being judge ,jury and executioner, by saying this I mean the statutory body cannot be the one to make inspection of homes and still adjudicate claims or damages complain from consumers.
That in other countries is handled by the DCA, who will make the inspection and set out requirements for obtaining utility services in the beginning, they now could a specify the different apparatus needed to satisfy the service, like surge and under voltage protectors, and in the case of water there should be filters and water softening equipment.
If such body independent of the APUA set these stipulations in place, then the matter should then be referred to the consumer department, we do not have a utility commission like other countries in the world and even right here in the Caribbean mist island has a commission , the political cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda plays that role which is a conflict of interest.
The UPP under the Hon. Baldwin Spencer administration had proposed a utility commission back then in 2004 and never got around to implementing it, had it been done , these private contract to generate electricity would have been properly vetted, and the APUA own power plant would have been investigated as to the cause of non functionality.
Customers have a far way to go to get satisfaction since the APUA is operating in an anamoly , since the APUA was formulated in the 1970,s by the PLM administration under George Walter, efforts have been made to just see it as a cash cow and no improvements, the APUA need to operate professionally where a board is put in place to give directives and they are executed by the technocrats with full fundings, a minister have no right sitting in that statutory corporation breathing down on the neck of the technocrats daily, that’s the job of the board on a month to month basis, then APUA would function customer service friendly for the consumers.
