They can land at the V.C. Bird International Airport and tell the Immigration Officer that they are coming on vacation.
The immigration officers know better than I do that no Jamaican comes to Antigua for vacation.
They cannot afford to βvacationβ in Antigua. In fact, they cannot even afford the plane ticket they obtained to fly to Antigua.
Yet, the immigration officer is convinced that these individuals come to vacation in Antigua and are staying at the home of a relative who is not an Antiguan citizen.
Naturally, this two-week vacation turns into six months and then into overstay. The immigration officers donβt have the care nor the resources to go find these Jamaicans who are here illegally.
They wait a few years, and just before an election, the government grants some sort of amnesty.
Before you know it, they are Antiguan citizens. During that wait, they work illegally and embed their violent and criminal culture into the society.
Some stay, but inevitably, their first stop is the American Embassy to get a visa because they know they canβt on a Jamaican passport.
Antigua is a mess. Now, I say all this so you can understand my confusion why suddenly Antigua is excluding itself from efforts for full free movement on CARICOM citizens. I mean, how much worse can it get? Antigua is literally no different from the urine-infested streets of downtown Kingston.
Why does Gaston not want more Jamaicans here? They are already coming in their hundreds monthly, and the six-month limit doesnβt apply to them. So why not just formalize it?
Antigua has lost its very fabric, and it is too late now. Gaston, your efforts to preserve what little is left of an Antiguan identity will be futile. Antigua has nothing to lose; the floodgates have already been opened.

Antigua was thriving before you came to our country. There is high employment in Antigua because you the non nationals will worked for less and then repatriated your money home. There is a housing shortage in Antigua, and a lot of you have to double up and triple up in one house to afford the rent and find a place to live. Crime is at scary proportions because of all the illegals and unemployed young people while non nationals take so many of the jobs. Antigua should not be solving the unemployment problems in Jamaica. Let your government deal with it.
I would that instead of coming to Antigua, you move to your parish of Portland, the bread basket of Jamaica. You will find there enough breadfruit, green bananas and other food to survive. Antigua was the last country in the OECS sub-grouping to fully embrace the free movement of OECS nationals. Charging for work permits and so on while Antiguans were allowed to move and establish themselves freely in the other islands.
So, the island attempting to skirt the intentions of full CARICOM free moment is no surprise. They will restrict if as long as possible so that the island can continue to benefit from the revenue that comes from work permits and extensions and all that while Antiguans will benefit (again) from the open borders of other islands.
Antiguans are the only ones who seem to think that every other nationality wants to come here and behave like we dont go anywhere to live and work.

But, I don’t own the country either. People can move where they want to. Yes I agree that some of them needs to shut their mouths especially when it comes to our political affairs, since most of them who are talking are not making any contributions to the economy, however as an Antiguan I have witnessed first hand how some non-nationals have embrace the good life they now have in our little island and have made significant contributions to the development of our country. Antigua’s immigration services is broken, immigration officers are restricted by corrupt minister and PM that refused to allowed and equipped Immigration Officers to do their job that they are paid to do,which includes rounding up over stayers, refused entry to Jamacians whose intentions are not for vacation.
The UK government, over the years has done everything possible to keep them out from the UK and the ones that resides in the UK if they commit a crime they do their time and half way through their sentences immigration officers visit them in jail and serve deportation notices on them. The British government unlike ALP do not rely on criminals to keep them in power.
Antigua is considerably smaller than JA and yet they are flocking to Antigua to get our passports to have access to the UK, USA and Canada…you can take a pig out of its pig pen, but you can’t take pig pen out of the pig.
They go to these countries and commit crime in Antigua’s name and inevitably these countries have stopped or stopping allowing Antiguans to have visa free access because of ALP poor judgment.
Antigua’s immigration should be allowed to deport if not all at least half of them to JA. The economy of Antigua is not subjected to the presence of Jamacians living in Antigua. Antiguans should stop renting their property to Jamacians and Nigerians. I made a point of not renting to either of them.
Antiguans should take steps to reclaim our country and stop sitting back lamenting. The ALP has created this monumental mess and they can’t get themselves out of it, therefore, Antiguans do what is possible and stop renting to them.
If Jamacians/Nigerians think they can do better in their country why are they flocking to Antigua? They should bite the bullet and leave our shores.

The fact of the matter is the author of the letter to the editor is correct. You cannot dispute what he or she has said. If anyone is a sad excuse of a creature then have a look in the mirror and you will see the image of a sad excuse of a creature staring at you. Now then, here’s another chance to deny anything the author wrote is not true; go ahead and state your case. Here’s a little bit of history which might be of interest to you: Many years ago the idea of a West Indian Federation was proposed and which would have made the English speaking Caribbean countries into a unitary state. Progress towards this even reached the transfer of cicil servants between the islands. All this came to an abrupt halt when Alexander Bustamante, late former Prime Minister of Jamaica declared he “did not want to integrate with paupers”, his words. He was of course referring to the smaller islands in the proposed Federation. The Prime Minister of Trinidad at the time, an ardent supporter of Federation then decalred, ’10 minus 1 equals nought’, got it? (There were ten island countries involved). And so the proposed Fedearation fell apart. It is also worth keeping in mind that Jamaica being the largest of the English speaking islands always had (not so much now for obvious reasons) a very misguided feeling of being ‘better’ as they used to say, than other islanders. Ha Ha. Fast forward to the present. Who are flocking in droves to the smaller islands in droves bringing their inbred criminality with them for a better life? You guessed it, it’s a small world that goes around. Under no circumstances would I say, nor has the author from what I have read, say that all Jamaicans are criminals, that would be absurd and neither would any reasonable person say or think that all Antiguans ‘still live in tacky wooden houses, barely held up with 4 blocks?’. God bless everyone. The only thing constant in life is change. I guess this country is experiencing a change in demographics. Nothing is wrong with that, but it is a bit unsettling for those who grew up here and are experiencing this massive cultural change. As long as all residents are working together to provide food, clothing, shelter, healthcare, transportation, and education for all, it doesn’t really matter who lives here. The problem is people here don’t work together. Instead people tear each other’s lives down. We need activities and programmes that bring us together in a wholesome way to get to know one another and stop fighting each other.

I don’t know who is committing all the crime, but apart from that possibility, I have never personally had any bad experiences interacting with Jamaicans. Many are super friendly, helpful, and funny, and their food is pretty good. Apart from the brothel rumours, Dominicans from Santo Domingo whom I have met have also been friendly. On the other hand 3 sets of Vincentians have given me hell in my neighborhood, at work, and in business. They seemed to think that because they looker blacker they have a right to take over the place and disrespect and put obstacles in the path of people who were born here. I’m sure that not all Vincentians are like that. But, I’m saying it doesn’t make sense to judge people solely based on where they come from or what they look like. Otherwise, you might be accidentally chasing away the very people who have your best interests at heart and welcoming persons who look the part but have I’ll intentions towards you. We seem to be forgetting the primary reason all these foreigners are here. Don’t misunderstanding me. Migration is as old as creation, but it is the ALP government, power hungry as the are, who followed the dictates of, “For your eyes only,”authored by a foreigner. In a quest for power, the floodgates were open without prejudice, allowing all kinds of people here. As part of the plan they instigated continual amnesties, exchanging citizenship and other things for votes, without considering the consequences. Today, our once peaceful society in inundated with all kinds of outside cultures, our resources are overwhelmed and not most of it good.
I have no problem with people migrating to better themselves, but Antigua belongs first to Antiguans and all others must know their place.The politicians created this mess and are in no way interested in reforms for fear of losing votes.
Stay if you want, but know your place. We could never get away with what you get away with in Antigua in YOUR country.
