Letter to the Editor:

Reconsidering the Curfew Time for Our Youth

Dear Editor,

I commend the government’s commitment to reducing youth loitering and promoting community safety through the new curfew for minors.

However, setting this curfew at 10 p.m. may not be stringent enough to achieve its intended impact.

To better protect our young people and reinforce responsible behavior, I propose implementing an 8:30 p.m. curfew on weeknights and extending it slightly to 9:30 p.m. on weekends.

This adjustment would help ensure that minors are home and safe before late-night risks increase.

Effective enforcement is critical to the success of any curfew. I strongly urge local authorities to step up patrols in key areas to monitor compliance.

Additionally, with many young people attending local fetes, it’s essential to extend this oversight to these events to ensure minors are safely supervised and, where necessary, escorted home in line with the curfew.

The recent proposal by Opposition Leader Jamale Pringle for mandatory ID cards for minors is another practical step toward successful enforcement. These ID cards would allow officers to easily verify ages and curfew compliance, making it simpler to keep minors off the streets at night.

A community that prioritizes the safety of its youth is one that sets a firm foundation for the future. With these measures in place, we can create a safer environment that nurtures responsible behavior among our young people.

Sincerely,

Sincerely, Repeater

  1. Lament and ask for time change to 8:30pm even 6:00pm because you all don’t have minors and hence don’t know the inconvenience this will cause on law abiding children.

  2. We must bear in mind that there are students studying at UWI who may have late classes. Maybe a pass can be given as was done during the covid pandemic.

  3. Agreed or perhaps 9pm week days, 10pm weekends. And they absolutely need ID cards. How else will they know their age without lying?

  4. This is an individual who is out of touch with the norms of Society. This is an individual who sits in his Ivory Tower without a care for our young people and probably one who has no children, no relatives and whom don’t care one shit aboút the development of our youths.
I had address this situation already and clearly pointed out that such a curfew made no sense and would only retard the progress of our progressive youths and not the deviant ones.
Where are the statistics to show that our youths are the ones that are committing these crimes and are the real criminals.
This individual knows that he is chatting real garbage, that he has to be hiding behind a false identity.

  5. The ID card is also a good idea kids these days look like grown-up, If government work hand in hand with parents it will be good. And to all the struggling parents, Human trafficking is real, Barbuda is not becoming just a tourist paradise for nothing.talk to your children.

  6. As the expert in this field here, no curfew should have been set. It is just outright laziness and greed that other deterrence wasn’t used. Give youths the choice and encourage them to be in and productive by providing them with extracurricular activities that can include game rooms, hobby rooms, fishing, sport practices, provide them with areas they so badly want to do but is not able to do. When I was in Secondary school I wished they had a law class, wished they had a music class, wish they had a program in which I meet those people I look up to (but now realize they are uncaring and dishonest).

There are other options that should have been tried before going to take away freedom and liberty of a person.

Do you guys honestly do not see the incompetence I am seeing? Do you guys really believe no other persons exist that can do substantially better than what you have or is in your mind? There are options that would have resulted in a better social impact for community and youths. Try them first. Curfews are last resorts.
