Alzarri Joseph did no wrong
Congratulations to the West Indies on another ODI series win against England, our arch rivals, make this a muscle reflex fellas. The highlight of this series is Alzarri Joseph’s conduct during the third ODI and not the valuable World Cup qualifying points.
Alzarri Joseph is vice-captain of the ODI team, which means he is also captain.
Both captains having a lengthy consultation on field, animated, jolly, or heated is normal, the captains are fined for over rate violations anyway.
The bowler sets his/her field and attempts to bowl to that field. The wicketkeeper has the best perspective of the shots the batter will play, so the wk will ask fielders to shift accordingly to cover gaps or scoring opportunities, all of this is normal.
Also, their adrenaline is firing, their mission is to hunt for victory for their team. Alzarri Joseph is an international athlete, a no nonsense man, fast bowlers cannot be nice people, the old West Indian players who fans salivate over were just like that.
They had nothing to say to the opposition on the field, the most they do is pull up their own players, that is a norm in elite competitive sports, that sense of urgency and zero margin for complacency.
Discussions in the best interest of the team are necessary, both of them may have well been justified or had good ideas, but Alzarri wasn’t disrespectful to the team or anyone in any way.
Players waving their arms or talking a bit hard is normal because they are trying to get the attention of players in the midst of lights, glare, trying to talk over loud music and drums, over a long distance, maybe frustrated by the chain of events and trying to take control of the situation.
I thought Alzarri did the right thing by walking away from the field to cool off for a bit and when he settled his emotions returned, he showed maturity, self awareness and restraint. Hope and Joseph are still best friends, they’ll have a drink over it in the dressing room. Hard luck Alzarri, come back stronger and better.

So did Americans in voting for Trump…It is all about personal opinions and preferences.
“I thought Alzarri did the right thing by walking away from the field…”
You see why society is the way it is. What wayward behaviour you are saying should be condoned? Alzarri is not a law unto himself on the field so how can it be acceptable for him to make a unilateral decision himself and walk off. Are we serious with what we type and have printed or these are just tongue in cheek comments.
Him walking off unilaterally means WI was one man short. England could have exploited this as footballers often do when a red card is given and the other team is one player short.
where is the video footage of the incident please?
As a sports man and a captain may times over, when you are captain you have the final say wrong or right. To walk off is a sign of utter disrespect to your captain. Would you do that to your boss?
This is why WI cricket sucks, they don’t play team they play individual. Props to Azari, he is a great player but his immaturity came out. Very unprofessional. His turn will come in the future if he keeps his head on. As an Atiguan growing up in the Canadian system of sports, they don’t care how good you are if you can’t be professional or a team player. Because you are representing your country.
Punishment is necessary to stomp that behavior out or it will just spread.
To condone this kind of behavior is mind boggling. I’m sure that you would be singing a different tune if Joseph were the captain and Seales or Shamar Joseph exhibited such behavior towards him. The guy has an anger problem. I saw him do something similar in a Super 50 game several years ago in Trinidad while playing for an emerging 11.
Now, I did not see the incident in question here so I cannot, and will not comment on that.
But I will comment on this article.
Firstly, this is the first time I am hearing about 2 captains on same team. I know a captain and his vice. If a commentator was to say “The two captains are talking, everyone, all of us will be looking for the batting and fielding captains.
Next, it is the responsibility of the captain, the real captain, the only captain to set field. Captains often allow senior experience bowlers to set there own fields, but a bowler does not have that right.
Lastly, are you a mind reader, or did Alzarri spoke to you
Did Alzarri walk away. Did he go off the field. Where did he go that he had to return. How did you know he went to cool off and all the rest.
One more last. Walking away a fight or physical confrontation shows maturing. Walking away from your immediate boss is disrespect to the fullest.
I think similar incident happened with Winston and Richie.
I beg to respectfully differ and disagree with you writer. The distinction between a mild disagreement and disrespect has to be drawn very clearly. When a senior player, the vice captain at that, crosses the line, a clear signal must be sent. You do not want to empower the more junior players making them fell that it is ok and acceptable to storm off the field as a show of discontent with the captain. Alzarri was lucky to get away with just 2 games suspension.
There is no defense for his behavior. None. And he is not the Vice Captain. No Vice Captain was named for this series as far as I am aware, even though I am hearing it is Brandon King. There is only one Captain and he had decided on one slip. Bowl to your field. And then you storm off the field without informing the umpire, so could not be replaced and your team is left with 10 players on the field. This is not kiddies cricket. This is international cricket being viewed around the world. Alzarri turned his back on his team mates and behaved like a petulant child. He needs to grow up.
Well now…. I’m not saying Alzahri is right, there’s so much disrespect going on that we are blinded to the fact that there is a more serious deep rooted issue at hand…. Other bowlers were allowed to set their fields or even adjust them after the captain had st the field he thinks would work…. The fact that you cannot respect your most senior bowlers request is disrespectful to him….. Lest we forget, the great Brian Lara walked out of the team because he didn’t like Ritchie Richardson captaincy…. He was never punished…. To label this Young man anything but an Honest to God competitor is doing him an injustice…. He’s as passionate as they come and truth be told, this was a festering issue not just in that game but many games before that…. Go back to the Sri Lanka series…. And the English series…. Last year!
I watched the games in Antigua and the one in Barbados. It was a very good for the West Indies, winning in Barbados.Alzarri Joseph’s behavior was very unprofessional. His suspension was the correct punishment.I do hope he learned something from this.
Trinidad has enough quality players to leave West Indies cricket and go alone
The young man follow his heart ❤️ and that’s the most important thing. The mindset in W. I. cricket is that we small island people don’t understand the game better than we the big island people. The right action was taken by Joseph by removing himself from an hostile situation. Until we as a people removed those arcade customs and values that make us accepts anything that deem manners. We’re going nowhere soon! What the keeper sees is one thing, I as the bowler knows what I want and can do. Most of you keep disrespecting Joseph and undermining him by miss fielding and dropping his catches. While he on the other hand will kill himself t field and take their catches. Until we recognize there’s an embedded problem in the institution, we are doomed.
I’d choose discipline over talent anyday of the week. What he did was unacceptable. He got off easy with those sanctions in my opinion. No one man’s feelings are bigger than the team or the sport on a whole. Professionalism is also on the path to success not just talent.
Alza
No one is bigger than the game, and that includes Alzarri, the captain make a decision to set the field, it maybe not what Alzarri wanted, the captain is behind the stumps, he see the field,he knows how the wicket is playing,so bowl to the field that is set for you, totally disrespect to the captain, the team and the fans, I think he should have been suspended for the remainder of the series.
You guys are all weirdos.
You think that walking off the field leaving the team with a man short, displaying ignorance in front of fans, kids who look up to them, the whole world watching is OK?
Who are you guys??????
This bulls___t he wrote should not even be published. Enough said !!
He should have been suspended for the five marches
It is obvious to me that the writer knows little or nothing about cricket. Two captains on the same team? That’s new to me! Bowler sets HIS field? That is also new. Strategic planning is done at team meetings. The captain has the responsibility to use the resources available to implement the plan. Alzarri was wrong and totally disrespectful. I agree with the two match suspension that should also be accompanied by giving him more time and mature before he can ascend to the vice captaincy again.
