Dear Prime Minister,
Your proposal of collecting an additional $100.00 for the licensing of vehicles is quite timely. Our roads are atrocious and perhaps, they are the worse throughout the region.
Now Mr. PM, I can clearly understand that your view of the proposed amount for the increase may be considered miniscule, however, for those of us who are in the low income bracket, the increase will certainly be an additional burden on our pockets.
Perhaps a system like Personal Income Tax should be considered for this exercise.
Be that as it is, I would like to go out on the limb and speak for those persons who are in the same low income bracket as I am, that we will certainly make that sacrifice of paying the additional $100.00, as long as your promise to the nation of providing us with proper & better roads throughout the island, is kept and simultaneously, we will get value for our money.
At this time, the quote from one of America’s great president comes to mind ” It is not solely what the country can do for us but what we can do for our country “
As I coclude, I am hoping that the increase of collections will also include those persons such as mechanics and owners of abandoned vehicles who conveniently have derilct vehicles parked along the road causing health hazards and havoc to traffic flow.
It is full time that ALL vehicles engaging the public road are taxed, whether or not the vehicles are usable. Such practice is been done in the Metropolitan countries, so why can’t it be done here?
Alex

Have the powers that be realise that the nasty waste water from the apartment complex by the Epicurean area is now making its way down to Mahico drive via the perpendicular road?
The owners have to be notified beforehand , if this happen.. right??? And what if someone can’t afford to fix or remove their vehicle?
Totally agree!
Is true… They should be dealt with just like unlicensed vehicles.
Transport Board & the police need to carry an intense study with our roads.
I agree that the owners of the abandoned vehicles parked at the side of the roads should be charged at the same time some roads need to be converted into one ways in order to relieve the traffic congestions.
what happen if the $100 paid and no road never fix, what next?
Any vehicle that is parked on or uses public right of ways, including easements and the likes must be licensed and insured. Otherwise, keep them on private property.
Amen!!
A guy just opened a mechanic shop on 5 Islands Main Road. The vehicles take up half of the westbound lane. Drivers heading west must maneuver the curve while driving on the wrong side of the road. I don’t suppose the authorities will correct this disaster-in-waitung until there is a head-on collision and someone dies or is seriously injured
The writer of this article is a bit disoriented in expressing his thoughts. An additional fee will be introduced to licensing vehicles in order to affect the road repair program. If you own a vehicle, the low income bracket should not come into play. It’s a onetime charge. $100.00 fee is miniscule in the scheme of costs associated with road repairs. There are about 45, 000 vehicles on the island. That is a drop in the bucket for a road program. Abandoned vehicles should be charged a lot more. People’s priorities are in the wrong place.
Antigua is a beautiful country, but many of us don’t recognize that fact as we have become too familiar with our surroundings. Only the visitors can x appreciate it. I we can find a way to conceptualize a clean society with good roadways, we would be greatest paradise in the Caribbean. Let’s do our part to make this a reality over the next few years.
Dr. Ray you like the political directorate and policy makers have no clue
Why ? The policy makers have not informed the public how much money they expect to raise through this new tax. That’s how good government works
As usual it will be mediocre quality road repair half done.
The derilict vehicle now a permission part of the scenery is there for the tourist to get sence of what we call scenic beauty.
Get your orientation together so we become the greatest most powerful beauty in the Caribbean
Dr. Ray you wrote that the writer may be disoriented; but I’d say you are disillusional.
This country is suffering from a miriad of problems, many of which are simple fixes. The writer attempt to address the fact that the new fee will have a disaportions effect in low income people.
In doing so, the article illustrated the half baked illconceived project policy.
Antigua is a beautiful but dirty filth laden country. Your priority is in the wrong place.
Rather than criticism of individual who attempt to address a poorly convinced policy. Its time for you to offer concepts and policy suggestions that makes Antigua and Barbuda a better place.
Your infatuation of Gaston Brown and the ABLP is failing as time passes you by.

Retirees don’t get increases on their Pensions. They don’t use the Roads as people going to and from work. Droping kids to school etc. I am suggesting that they should be exempted from this increase.
A mechanic with so many derelict vehicles is questionable.
