LETTER: Agnes Meker Raises Alarm Over Neglect of National Archives

I would like to post my personal concerns.

I am very concerned about the recent closing of the A & B National Archives. It was known for months that the building had deteriorated, yet nothing was done to put in place an alternative safe storage of archival contents.

There are invaluable historical contents that need to be in a climate-controlled building and not boxed up in a container or left in a mould-infested building.
SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE IMMEDIATELY.

Researchers constantly access historical records which are now unavailable and stand to be permanently damaged or destroyed, including the Codrington papers for which the Archives was built.

PLEASE, please, do something ASAP.

The containers which were to be retrofitted to house collections while the Archive building is being fixed have been sitting there for 9 months or more and have not been touched.

All of this could have been avoided if the original plan was acted upon.

  1. If there is no measurement of who and what we are as a people, the manner in which we treat the archives is an indication.
