Dear Editor,

I am compelled to raise a growing and deeply concerning issue that affects thousands of road users across St. John’s and its environs: the persistent failure of traffic lights at several major intersections.

Imagine driving and approaching an intersection where the light isn’t working, no one wants to stop, and everyone barrels through as if we’re in a rallycross race.

Can you imagine how dangerous that is for the public? But the real question is: who cares?

Let me take you on a drive and point out these faulty stop lights.

We begin on Independence Avenue, right there by Everyday Gas Station, wait still on Independence Avenue, just a few meters up outside APUA.

Let’s Head over to All Saints Road, by Robinson Gas Station, an area often crossed by children on their way to and from school.

Let’s go into All Saints now, up the road from the police, right there by the gas station, that’s another intersection used by school children.

Now, let’s swing by the corner of Fort Road, Dickenson Bay Street, and Popeshead Streets, another malfunctioning signal, in a zone heavily used by school children and pedestrians.

Oh and I won’t forget Valley Road, that by King George V Grounds dark again.

Last stop, the most troubling of them all, the broken stoplight directly outside Golden Grove Primary School.

These aren’t backroads or low-traffic areas.

These are routes travelled daily by drivers, buses, pedestrians, and our children.

The absence of working traffic signals has turned these intersections into chaotic free-for-alls, where congestion and near misses are part of the daily commute.

Of all these, the one that keeps me up at night is the light outside Golden Grove Primary School.

Young students are crossing that road during peak traffic hours without the protection of a functioning pedestrian signal. It’s not just dangerous, it’s a tragedy waiting to happen. And it’s entirely preventable.

Traffic lights are not cosmetic features of urban life; they are essential infrastructure.

They maintain order, prevent collisions, and save lives. When they fail and continue to go unrepaired the risks escalate. The silence from the responsible agencies makes it even worse.

I am calling on the Ministry of Works and the Antigua and Barbuda Transport Board to act with urgency. These lights must be fixed now. The safety of our citizens, especially our children, depends on it.

Thank you for the opportunity to bring attention to this pressing matter.

Sincerely,

Simone Davis

  1. I am absolutely sure that unless something is done about the blinking lights that there will eventually be a serious accident by the junction of Dickenson Bay and Popeshead Streets. When those guys driving their massive rigs leave the Port, they are aware that they have the right of way and they tend to come barging at full speed through the blinking traffic lights. Should any driver coming from the Popeshead /Fort Road side be uncertain and stray into the traffic coming from the Port, it’s lights out for them. This needs to be fixed now to avoid a tragedy. I’ve seen several near misses, as recent as yesterday.

  2. It is sad that we have so many idiotic drivers on the streets. No maners , no patients, not a bit of courtesy. All that’s needed is to do is treat this area as a 4-way stop. Not rocket science at all.

  3. Ms. Davis. I am in agreeable with you. Don’t remember seeing American & All Saints Rd and on to Bendals Road. Crazy crazy. I keep saying this. Put dem on. Dat a wah dem fah. I have witnessed the lights on red, and at least 10 cars still coming through, never mind to when they turn them off. Really unsafe conditions.

  4. I’m assuming that the persons here that complain about the stop lights not being fixed are absolutely persons who, 1) don’t have anywhere to be, which includes work and 2) cannot drive at all. I have never had any problems with the stop lights being out. Them, being functional in these very busy areas, only cause a back log of cars that takes you miles back. Do you people drive in the morning or midday when these lights are on? My thing is, we know drivers are crazy, that will never change, so the question here, is, how good are you at driving to have this kind of complaint? Take another course if you need to, because I was taught to drive for me and others, and I have places to be. So the light can stay off.

  5. The person who wrote cant drive. The lights blinking is the best thing ever, are you retarded? There are so many vehicles on the road, haven’t you been in the traffic before when the lights were working? Or maybe you’re unemployed with no where to go! Because I can’t understand how you would take your time to write this bullshit.
The person who wrote this never traveled before…. Imagine going to work for 8 pm or going to home at 5pm when all traffic lights are working.

Travel out of Antigua to faster country.
AAMOF, you should walk and leave driving and stop lights discussion for people who can actually drive because I can’t understand how yell can be so retarded

  6. I agree that some traffic lights should be working , but sometimes it makes the traffic flow smoother when they’re off. Especially the junction by ApuA …. That light can cause a serious blockage from independence Dr all the way up to DeSouza Rd.
So fix some and get the Rid a some .

  7. Wasn’t an announcement made, some months ago, that some of the lights, more so, those in the city, would be off during peak time to allow the traffic to flow better?

  8. I understand the light issue by Popeshead Street.
But in other areas, the lights can stay blinking forever. The street lights just cause an unnecessary in a small island already dealing with traffic congestion.

  9. What if I told you that every one of those lights are working and not malfunctioning as was suggested by some. Whistles

  10. Dear Editor,
Th person Who write this nonsense is a pure ignorant about how to drive on Antigua roads…There is No issues with those lights being off, by far the traffic is smoother with them Off. This person don’t have a dam clue about Driving in Antigua in peak time. Light off is a heaven for regular drivers who know how to drive
