LETTER: A Call for Joint Townhall Meetings

4

In the interest of collaborative national development, I am calling on the parliamentary representatives of both the ABLP and UPP to sit down and schedule regularly recurring town hall meetings in each constituency. I specifically request joint meetings because they allow both the current government and the opposition to engage with the public in a transparent manner, hear their concerns, and address them in a professional setting.

For this initiative to succeed, it will also require members of the public to attend these meetings in a professional and cordial manner, refraining from loud and distasteful behavior that sometimes arises from differing opinions. The new Antigua and Barbuda is bigger and better than that. If our country’s infrastructure, education and healthcare systems, and economy are to rise and surpass those of neighboring countries, there is much work to be done, and it needs to be accomplished together.

Therefore, I am committed to taking these steps to effect the change I would like to see in Antigua & Barbuda. I challenge everyone who has the best interests of the country at heart to join me in creating a better nation.

We are in a new era, and our style of politics and policymaking must align with the progress we aspire to achieve. Unlike our forefathers, a significant percentage of the electorate are high school graduates, with many holding first, second, and even third degrees. We are living in an information age, and we are more educated and informed about current affairs, enabling us to contribute more to the development of our nation.

The ramblings on Facebook, the comments sections under news articles, and unproductive talk shows only provide an avenue for people to ramble. This is a call for my fellow citizens to stop being keyboard warriors and to come out to these town hall meetings to share their concerns, ideas, and displeasures in a meaningful way. In short: less talk, more action!

The joint town hall meeting benefits both the public and the political parties, making it advantageous for everyone to back this initiative.

Why should the public ask for such a meeting?

Town hall meetings play a crucial role in enhancing communication within

communities by providing a platform for open dialogue between residents and

leaders, fostering transparency and trust. These gatherings encourage community

engagement, allowing residents to voice their opinions and concerns, which can

lead to increased civic involvement. Through these interactions, leaders can

gather diverse perspectives and feedback, facilitating informed decision-making that reflects the community’s needs. Additionally, town halls help strengthen relationships between citizens and local officials, promoting collaboration and understanding. They also serve as a valuable space for problem-solving, enabling community members to discuss issues and brainstorm solutions collectively.

Furthermore, these meetings offer an opportunity for education and awareness, informing the public about important topics and initiatives. By bringing people together, town halls foster a sense of community and belonging, while also ensuring that leaders are held accountable in a public forum, reinforcing democratic principles. In short, political leaders are compelled to rise to the occasion and be the best versions of themselves, which benefits everyone.

Why should the political parties be interested in such a meeting?

When different political parties hold a town hall together, it tends to draw a larger crowd, providing them with an opportunity to connect with more potential voters. These meetings allow parties to showcase their unique ideas and opinions, helping voters understand what sets them apart. By collaborating for a town hall, parties can project a more approachable image and a willingness to work together, which may appeal to voters fatigued by constant political conflict. Joint meetings also enable parties to discuss common issues that affect the entire community, demonstrating their shared commitment to voters’ concerns. This collaboration allows them to attract a more diverse audience, gaining insights into various groups’ priorities. Furthermore, these events can engage more individuals in political conversations, potentially leading to increased voter turnout and community involvement. With all parties present, they can hold each other accountable for their promises, reinforcing the importance of follow-through. Joint events often attract media coverage, amplifying their messages and reaching a wider audience. Additionally, these meetings foster connections among party members, paving the way for future collaborations on pressing issues. Ultimately, town halls serve as a valuable platform for parties to gauge the competition and understand the issues that matter most to voters as they prepare for upcoming elections.

In closing, I implore all stakeholders; citizens, politicians, and community leaders alike, to recognize the immense value of these town hall meetings. Let us prioritize open communication and collaboration in our efforts to advance the interests of Antigua and Barbuda. By working together, we can foster a stronger, more united nation that reflects the aspirations of its people. Your participation and engagement are vital in shaping the future of our beloved country. Together, let’s take meaningful actions that will pave the way for lasting change.

Sincerely,

Proud Citizen of Antigua and Barbuda

  1. This person must be dreaming….if we can’t get a commitment to candidates debates on national issues…is have townhall meetings….
Let’s start with some debates and then take from there…but a townhall meeting with both sides is a bit far fetch….my opinion.

  2. Does it matters where the person is giving the ideas or whether the person getting them truly considering them?

It can be so frustrating going numerous places and to numerous government officials who will not listen to you. Remember they always think they are under threat. They think you want their job, they need to stay in power for the money and the power.

Some people genuinely do not want the job but want to see progress and others succeed. I genuinely suffer from survivors guilt when I go to Antigua, I wish others were lucky like me, I feel like I do not deserve what I have morally and legally accomplished because others I see locally are deserving to but have not gotten all I truly believe they could get.

So, a solution to the way I am feeling, is that I want to push for them to have what I truly believe they should have by this time and contribute as much as I can.

I am not after your job or believing I know more than you. I just know I have ideas you have not tried and they have been successful, millions of times successful. Millions of dollars successful. So why not try other things to help your people and other ideas and people to help your people instead of always feeling threatened that your job is wanted by others.
