LETTER: Unprofessional conduct by a police officer during a stop-and-search

12

Dear Editor,

I write to express deep concern and disappointment regarding the unprofessional conduct displayed by a police officer of the Antigua and Barbuda Police Force during a stop-and-search incident on January 1, 2024, at approximately 9:45 PM.

The actions and handling of this situation have raised serious questions about the integrity and professionalism of the force.

Eyewitness accounts reveal troubling inconsistencies in the officer’s narrative.

Initially, it was alleged that the detainee attempted to flee the scene. Later, the claim was made that he resisted arrest, and upon his release, yet another version surfaced, alleging that he struck the officer in the face.

These shifting accounts undermine credibility and demonstrate a disturbing disregard for fairness and justice.

Even more alarming is the reported physical aggression by the officer. Witnesses state the detainee was struck without valid justification.

When questioned by the detainee’s mother, the officer reportedly responded, “Me have the right fa do um,” reflecting an alarming misuse of power and a lack of accountability.

Such behavior is unacceptable for a public servant tasked with upholding the law and safeguarding citizens.

Equally concerning was the inaction of other officers present. By failing to intervene, they tacitly endorsed the conduct, eroding public trust and suggesting a troubling culture within the department.

Silence in the face of misconduct is complicity, and it weakens the public’s faith in those sworn to protect and serve.

This incident underscores the urgent need for reform within the Antigua and Barbuda Police Force. Stronger oversight, ethical training, and a commitment to accountability are critical to restoring public trust. Citizens must feel protected, not threatened, by those entrusted with their safety.

I urge the leadership of the police force to investigate this matter thoroughly and take decisive action to prevent such abuses of power. A transparent and accountable police force is essential for fostering trust and ensuring justice for all.

Sincerely,
Accountant

  1. Why not give his name and badge number, the general public must know who these pigs are, they do not belong in public service, they are more suited in a hog pen

  2. Such a vague report, much like that given by Wayne Marsh. Is this yet another attempt by the gay desperados to inflame public opinion against the Police/Army as George the gunslinger makes a play to become the MP for St. Peter.
To the author of this nonsense, contrary to your partisan belief that Antiguans and their imported “friends” are just a herd of illiterate, gullible followers, think again! Those tactics simply will not work

  3. Y’all Antigua and Barbuda police gonna diss the right one. There are many of us no social media no phone nothing so we no get trace. Leave us alone. We nah hurt nobody we nah diss nobody we work n mek we likkle money. Seek we fruit build things sell food whatever cut grass. If we ever get harassed or our kids by any cop in Antigua, remember you’re a human being. Don’t ever forget that. U have a family right? Okay gwan hide behind a badge. Piece a crap. Have right? Alright like man go sit they and tek blow. We ain’t no man weh a gwan like we bad. We peaceful n take care we business. Don’t pass your place nobody here scared of any police n once you follow the right order we will too. Know who u a ramp with.

  4. That is why so many of our youth are behind bars. You just got that one-sided vague story and all of you bashing the police officer. Did you the “accountant ” saw what transpired why the officer had to use force to restrain this so-called “peacemaker”? Stop bringing half cook story to the public and get the facts. Our country will be better if we will all act responsibly for once.

  5. This letter is to vague and in my opinion is nonsense really. It has no substance.

Eye witness account reveal inconsistencies in Officers narrative.” What the he’ll is that. Tell us what the eyewitness saw. and how that differs from the Officers account.

“These shifting accounts undermines credibility.” What shifting accounts? And I am going from your story. First suspect tries to flee. 2nd account he resisted arrest. 3rd he struck officer. Now, I was not there, but these are not inconsistencies or shifting accounts. These are simply different events in the whole situation. If the officer was to also say now “and oh he damaged my wristwatch, it is not inconsistencies or shifting, just added events in the scenario. Once again I was not there. If you say the officer is lying I do not know. But your letter clearly does not prove that. Could it be he tried to escape by resisting arrest and in doing so his hand touched the Officers face.
If he did not resisted say so. If he did not flee or tried to, make that clear. If he never hit the officer in the face please state for example that persons who was there said that never happened.
    Tell us your version.
To all persons posting comments, please refrain from making judgemental comments without the facts
Remember during covid at Pay Less shoe store Woods. Lady was arrested for mask. Every one was verbally abusing the Police and in the end judge found them guilty and lady came out and apologized to the police.

We can easily be swayed by persons narrative. Once, listening to cricket, commentator Andrew Mason said that the field Darren Sammy have is neither attacking nor defending. When Australia was in field, other guy told Mason that the Australians have the same field settings Sammy had. Mason responded ” They are defending and attacking at the same time.”

Is your glass half empty or half full.

  6. Resisting arrest, fleeing the scene and punching an officer could all occur in the same incident. Hence I do not see the writer providing any credible evidence of conflicting reporting or wrong doing by the police.
While the writer may be correct in their assertion, the evidence given in this letter is rather poor.

  7. If this story is what happened in Villa last night around the same time period then imma say BS!!! That boy love trouble and his parents know he is a bad apple.. PLEASE STOP THE CAPPIN!!! TOP CAPPA DEM! TOP CAPPA DEM!

  8. THIRD PARTY REPORTING? …ARE PERTINENT FACTS MISSING…?

Not very clear as to that which may have transpired.

This apparent ‘…THIRD PARTY REPORTING’ might just be ‘…Missing Pertinent FACTS.’

Now, as it affects ‘…USE OF FORCE,’ the ‘…POLICE DISCIPLINARY REGULATIONS’ clearly states that no member of the ‘Police Service’ shall:
