Prime Minister Gaston Browne recently considered inviting Jamaican dancehall artist Vybz Kartel to perform at the upcoming One Nation concert but expressed concerns about the potential negative influence of Kartel’s lyrics on youth. Kartel, incarcerated from 2011 to 2024, was released in July 2024 after serving 13 years. Browne mentioned that the government would instead seek to have Richie Spice perform. He noted that while Kartel has mellowed, concerns remain about his content. The One Nation Concert, hosted by PM Browne, features international artists and supports local talent.

Bringing Vibz Cartel would totally undermine all the work you’ve done to have these gangs “drop their weapons “. Artists who promote violence etc. should not even be able to perform in this country; especially given the current state of affairs regarding youth, gang violence and the negative influence their music has on society.
