Leon Riley sentenced to 18 years for rape and an additional 9 years for serious indecency

SOURCE- OBSERVER-In a court ruling that brings closure to a harrowing case, Leon Riley has been sentenced to 18 years for rape and an additional 9 years for serious indecency. These sentences are set to run concurrently, meaning that Riley will serve a total of 18 years behind bars.

The judgment also takes into account the time that Leon Riley spent on remand awaiting trial, which will be deducted from his overall sentence.

Riley’s legal journey through the justice system has been marked by twists and turns, with the recent verdict serving as a resolution to a long and challenging legal battle.

The case stems from an incident seven years ago when Leon Riley was previously convicted of raping a 15-year-old girl near Pensioners Beach.

In April 2016, he was initially charged, and after a jury found him guilty of both rape and serious indecency, he was handed a 15-year prison sentence.

However, in November 2021, Riley’s conviction was overturned by the Eastern Caribbean Court of Appeal. This decision was made on the basis of a legal technicality, resulting in Riley’s release from custody.

A retrial was subsequently ordered, under the supervision of a new judge, Justice Ann-Marie Smith, now coming to a conclusion with this recent ruling.

  1. Question is it only in Antigua and Barbuda the when a person is charged for Rape that their pics are with held? Why would u want to withhold thier pics, isn’t it a right that the public knows whom these same rapists are so that in the future we can always keep an eye on them…. Asking cause it’s wierd to me….

      • Smh y’all always willing to reply weirdly to a simple question…. I don’t know the person I don’t know the person’s face what I do know I have kids and a daughter and with your sarcastic remark a launch goes to show that even you the editor totally lost to the story which is understandable but don’t get at me for asking a sensible question I am just puzzled my nation is in chaos

      • @Editor…where are your Court Reporters/photographers? Or you only depend on Social Media posts, and or #Real_News submittals?
Your response is a blatant slap in the face to the public.

    • I totally agree. Antigua is a small place and full of predators. we need to know who these people are so we can protect ourselves.

      • What about the protection of that young lady whom might be still traumatized because of this whole ordeal? The law is not only trying to protect that young lady by not realeasing to much info about the man that will lead to the public finding out who the young lady really is.

  2. It’s well overdue that heavy sentences for rape be given. There has to be deterrence to these sexual crimes. Moreso if the evidence is overwhelming that the offense occurred

  3. What is done in the dark, must come to light. He has been troubling young girls for years. He is a known predator, using that computer store to lure young girls by offering them jobs. I am certain that this is not is only victim. I hope he uses his time in jail to change his ways.
