Leading Cancer Experts to Convene in Antigua for Regional Symposium

Some of the Caribbean’s top health professionals will gather in Antigua this weekend for a high-level symposium tackling one of the region’s most urgent health challenges—cancer.

The Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre (SLBMC) will host its Multi-Disciplinary Cancer Symposium on Saturday at Sandals Grande Antigua Resort and Spa. The event is expected to bring together oncologists, urologists, gynecologists, pediatricians, radiologists, surgeons, nutritionists, and nurses to share expertise and develop strategies to improve cancer prevention, treatment, and patient support.

Collaborative Approach

SLBMC Marketing and Communications Manager Salma Crump said the symposium goes beyond academic discussion.

“We are building a collaborative platform where knowledge, innovation, and compassion intersect—so we can make cancer care more effective, more accessible, and more equitable for our people.”

International Expertise, Caribbean Solutions

The programme will feature presentations from leading specialists, including:

  • Dr. Anesa Ahamad, Radiation Oncologist – showcasing advances in breast cancer care that are safer and more accessible for families in the region.
  • Dr. Jonathan Makanjuola, Consultant Urologist – highlighting how artificial intelligence is reshaping prostate cancer treatment in the Caribbean.
  • Dr. Hanybal Yazigi, SLBMC Oncologist – examining the role of compassionate communication in oncology.
  • Dr. Cherie Tulloch, Gynecologist – outlining strategies to close gaps in cervical cancer screening access.
  • Dr. Michelle Reece-Mills, Pediatric Oncologist/Hematologist – addressing the unique challenges of childhood cancer care.
  • Samantha Moitt, RDN, MPH, Chief Nutrition Officer – presenting on how nutrition and lifestyle changes can reduce cancer risks.

Why It Matters

Cancer is among the leading causes of death across the Caribbean, where late diagnoses, treatment shortfalls, and inequities in access to care remain major obstacles. Organisers hope the symposium will strengthen regional health systems by promoting collaboration and equipping teams with practical solutions.

“This is about saving lives,” Crump said. “The symposium is not just about theory—it’s about building capacity, forging partnerships, and ensuring that the Caribbean is not left behind in the global fight against cancer.”
