In a court appearance Attorneys for suspended Superintendent of Police Ray John and his former partner Shakema Charles announced their intention to file no-case submissions.
John and Charles had been previously cleared of the charges in March when Justice Tunde Backre ruled that a judge alone could not try conspiracy cases. However, they were recharged and brought back to St. John’s Magistrate’s Court shortly after.
The two are accused of collaborating with Vincentian resident Lonzel Jones to produce fake passport bio pages using unauthorized Multi-Layered Infilling Sheets. John, with Charles’ help, allegedly sent documents to Jones through Lisborn Michael of the Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda. Police intercepted Jones and John’s nephew, Geraldo James, during a related transaction.
Represented by attorneys Hugh Marshall and Michael Archibald, the defendants have consistently maintained their innocence. Their initial attempt to dismiss the case failed, but a second application succeeded when the judge ruled that a jury trial was necessary.
Now, with the case back in the Magistrate’s court, the defense hopes to secure a dismissal before it proceeds to committal and retrial. Magistrate Conliffe Clarke will review the no-case submissions, and the next court appearance is scheduled for September 12.
