Statement on Haiti by H.E. Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, Chair, CARICOM,

CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana – Friday, 8 March 2024:   CARICOM Chairman, H.E. Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali gives an update in relation to ongoing efforts in working with the various stakeholders in Haiti to bring stability and normalcy back to the People and country of Haiti.

“The Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community remain engaged in deep discussions with the various stakeholders in Haiti and Prime Minister Henry. Whilst we are making considerable progress the stakeholders are not yet where they need to be.

“We are acutely aware of the urgent need for consensus to be reached.  We have impressed on the respective parties that time is not on their side in agreeing to the way forward. From our reports, the situation on the ground remains dire, and is of serious concern to us.

“At the same time we have taken the decision as a Community to write the Heads of State and Heads of Government of the key countries with whom Haiti has engaged as partners, inviting them to meet with our Heads in CARICOM in Kingston, Jamaica on Monday the 11th of March, to urgently address this state of affairs and all other matters critical to the stabilization of security and the provision of urgent humanitarian aid to the people of Haiti. It is vital that this engagement be at a highest level as possible to send a clear message of unity between CARICOM and the international community as we work together to provide the critical support to the Haitian people at this time of crisis for them.

“We would like the Haitian people to know that we will continue to work with them, on their behalf until there is a satisfactory resolution that brings stability and relief to them.”

  1. Dr. Ali may be the Chairman of CARICOM but does not possess the credibility to have any impact of Haiti’s future.
As the leader of a country with one of the worlds known largest fossil fuel reserves, that has given him some visibility.

CARICOM suffers from a milder form of what Haiti is dealing with. Many leaders in the Caribbean are elected by a manipulated political system. Dr. Ali is among them.

Until very recently Jamaica elections were controlled by determined by the Garrison Political System of political violence. UWI stood by for many years.

Antigua is building a form of Garrisons at Painters and at Dunbars.

Garrisons has led to a breakdown of law and order, and human misery. The Emperor has no clothes. UWI is a failure in advancing democracy across CARICOM

  2. Stop blaming our Caricom leaders, they are doing what they can and they/we not responsible for what is happening in Haiti. The criminals responsible are the French and the Americans those bunch of thieves.

    • It’s ironic your moniker is “Point” for you missed the point being made. The type of politics that got Haiti where it is today is the type of politics being practiced across the Caribbean.

KNOW YOUR FACTS BEFORE YOU JUMP TO DEFEND CARIBBEAN POLITICIANS.

Here in Antigua our Prime Minister has been empowering the local gangs. He gave them the J’ouvert street festival to run.

Jamaica has and have the Garrisons. To know more goggle “Garrisons Jamaica”.

Jamaica’s crimes waves come out of the Garrison form of Politics where some politicians cannot go into some areas of Jamaica.

    • I prefer Antigua to be a colony of the UK again. I prefer American and French thieves vs. Jamaican and Haiti ones.

  3. This what happens when you (Politicians) help develop gangs for votes and other political gains, turning a blind eye on all the illegality like guns, ammo, drugs etc, some local Politicians and even power countries help supply these same weapons.
Year after year gangs continue to do their thing untouched, while at the same time growing larger and larger, in this case powerful enough to take over an entire country.
The innocent people continue to suffer, with no answers, help or ending in site.
Just think back to the assassination and the way it happened and ask yourselves can this be real?

  4. Guy Philippe, fresh from a six-year stretch in a U.S. prison after pleading guilty to a drug-related, money-laundering charge, again has his sights on the presidential palace.

Criminal gangs are threatening to take control of Haiti and its Prime Minister remains stranded in Puerto Rico, unable to return.

It could be his best chance for Guy Philippe is uniquely positioned to intercede between Haiti’s warring factions. He was known for distributing the drug wealth he accumulated through food handouts and community programs, winning him support in the slums.

Not one for sitting around and not taking action is Haiti’s most powerful warlord, Jimmy “Barbecue” Chérizier, who has vowed to overthrow Prime Minister Ariel Henry.

In the meantime, when Prime Minister Ariel Henry met with CARICOM leaders in Guyana recently, he virtually gave them the “Finger”.

  5. When Ariel was not able to land in Haiti or DR; he did not turn to a CARICOM country.

He chooses Puerto Rico from which he could negotiate asylum from a US jurisdiction.

All the political thieves nurturing the gangs in Antigua and Barbuda should take note.
