Tension between authorities and farmers at Burke’s Estate has persisted due to conflicting land use interests.
The authorities aim to develop housing projects on land currently farmed by the community.
This misunderstanding has led to frustration among the farmers, who rely on the land for their livelihoods.
Despite acknowledgment of the mistake by officials, tensions remain high. Owolabi Elabanjo, a Senior Extension Officer, attributes the conflict to a failure in land ownership verification.
Farmers facing eviction have been promised relocation, but many refuse to leave. Some farmers have been leasing the land for generations without compensation.
Discussions between farmers and House Antigua Ltd, the landowner, have been ongoing for two years.

There most definitely is a food security problem in the world right now and anyone who wants to destroy productive farming for unnecessary housing projects has to be a narrow minded, destructive idiot! Farming/agriculture should be the most important Ministry. IMO the ABLP ministers that support GB in his apparent quest to destroy farm land and consequently the livelihood of the farmers who can hopefully help to ensure that we don’t have food shortages in the very near future are short sighted idiots also.
The infrastructure in Antigua obviously cannot cope with all the immigrants that have been allowed free movement into the island. Our borders need to be diligently controlled. This excess of unattractive housing projects is destroying the environment. Leave the farmers alone and use the public provided tax dollars to repair and fund the Ministry of Agriculture to be as productive as possible. WAKE UP Antigua and demand an end to the constant self-serving land abuse crap!
