Lamin Newton has officially been sworn in as a senator in the Upper House, marking a major milestone in his political career. The ceremony, held at Government House, was attended by family, friends, dignitaries, and supporters who gathered to celebrate the occasion.
In his speech, Newton, a passionate advocate for public service and community development, expressed sincere gratitude for the chance to represent his constituents. “It’s an honor to stand here today, but it’s also a bittersweet moment,” he shared. “I wish my father could have been here to see this. I believe his passing was part of the journey that brought me to this point. He meant the world to me.”
While reflecting on his personal loss, Newton remained focused on his commitment to the people of All Saints East and St. Luke, a constituency he believes has long been overlooked. “This isn’t about me,” he said firmly. “It’s about the people I serve. I’m here to give them the representation they deserve.”
Newton also outlined his key priorities for his term, including improving housing and education. He took a moment to thank the Prime Minister for his guidance and belief in his potential, adding, “I want to make him proud, and more importantly, serve the people of Antigua and Barbuda to the best of my ability.”
He also acknowledged the pivotal role played by E.P. Chet Greene in shaping his political journey, crediting him with inspiring him to pursue a degree in political science at the University of the West Indies’ Five Islands Campus.
As the event concluded, Greene offered his congratulations to Newton, expressing confidence in his future and emphasizing that this was just the beginning of what promises to be a promising political career.
