La Toya Wallace: Another Antigua and Barbuda success story

9

La Toya Wallace and her daughter Gleniq Goodwin walked through the doors of Monroe College September 2016 to pursue their goal of higher education.  Being an Antiguan myself, I took keen interest in them, especially La Toya, as I was her school counsellor.  She proved to be an excellent student, mentor and she got involved in many activities of the school.  She epitomizes the true meaning of school spiritedness as she is a very popular figure on the compound, so much so, when she walks into an office she is known and called by name; even the vice president and president know her by name!  She has one of the kindest hearts that I have witnessed. She gives encouraging words, hugs, and feeds us almost weekly when she bakes in the culinary lab.

She excels academically, and carries a very heavy work load.  One semester, she did seven courses, her internship, mentored for twenty hours weekly in the Academic Center, prepared for a competition and still got an A in every class and awarded for perfect attendance.  La Toya is on the President’s list, every semester and receives the Golden Ticket award, every semester.  Since her enrollment at Monroe College, La Toya has been invited to join many professional Organizations such as The Hospitality Network NEWH, The National Society for Leadership and Success (NSLS), The Institute of International Education Peer (iie) The Antigua and Barbuda Students’ Association USA Inc. and the National Association for Black Accountants (NABA).  Because of her serious approach to her studies and her exemplary work ethics, whenever I have students who are struggling academically, I take them to her to ensure that they get their work done and get back on track.

La Toya graduated June 13th, with highest honors: Suma Cum Laude in Hospitality Management (BA) and Baking and Pastry Arts (AAS).  She shares the spotlight with Gleniq, who graduated with a degree in Business Administration.  La Toya has proven that it is never too late to pursue your dreams.  As her counsellor, a woman, and especially as an Antiguan, I couldn’t be more proud of her accomplishments!  Her next stop is grad school and there is no doubt in my mind that she will excel at that too.  I wish her every success in the future.
