In 2015, Damien Marvay made his soca debut with Survive The Weekend. Since then, the Barbadian soca artiste has been trailblazing. With his melodic voice and boundless energy, he has stamped his groovy soca on the minds of soca lovers across the Caribbean.
A semi-finalist in the International Soca Competition with the popular hit, Know The Face, Marvay did not place but he left Trinidad with many unforgettable memories and life lessons.
“It was a mind shock, a culture shock but yet still finding a new home. I feel like I learnt so much in a very short space of time,” Marvay told Bajan Vibes. “I had to really figure out how they do things over there, which is similar to how we do things over here. Which is really to lead with a positive energy, sing your song good whenever you can.”
He added: “The number one thing that the touring and the living in Trinidad for a while has done is just increased my confidence . . . Bahamas, Bequia, St Vincent, wherever, I feel more at home in the soca industry. It is not a feeling of I have to fight hard to get noticed; it is just a feeling of I just have to keep bringing good music to the people.”
Marvay is back for Crop Over 2017 with Antidote which has had a good response from locals. The music video which has been released, was conceptualized by Katrina Chandler of Country Life Music and director Selwyne Browne. It shows Marvay walking through Bridgetown on a normal Saturday morning.
“There are people from outside who have not been home who have linked me to say . . . I took them home in a way,” commented Marvay about the video’s popularity.
Although he was tight-lipped about his second song for the season, Marvay disclosed he definitely will be competing again this year. After placing second in the Sweet Soca competition in 2016, the animated soca artiste’s aim this year is to take the title.
“Some artistes might think that (competition) is not for them and they will stay on the outskirts of it but for me, these are competitions in my country . . . and People’s Monarch is something I have voted for in the past, Soca Monarch, Pic O De Crop is something I look up to forever. So, to be part of the system . . . I feel proud and honoured to be one of the horses in the race,” he explained.
Coming into the height of the season in July and August, the young entertainer promises to deliver good music, good performances and good vibes for his fans.
“I hope everything is feel fresh all over again for everybody because it is feel fresh all over again for me ,” he said. “I don’t think of last year or the year before. I think of now, what am I hearing now and what music am I giving the people now.”
