SOURCE CNC3: Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has insisted that Trinidad and Tobago has no plans to leave Caricom, despite her Government’s focus on strengthening ties with countries outside the region.

Speaking to reporters in Tobago today during her first official visit to the island since being re-elected, Persad-Bissessar said the country must expand its international partnerships while remaining part of the regional bloc.

“What I did say, and I’ll repeat, is we must also look to others. We have to look to others in the international arena. So for example, we are looking to the UAE, we are looking to Qatar, looking to Bahrain, looking to Europe. We cannot keep closed doors and expect things to change,” she said.

She added that Caricom will continue as a block but stressed the need to attract new investment. “So CARICOM will remain as a block, we will remain as part of the block, but we have to open our wings. We have to fly. We have to go elsewhere. We have to get investors. CARICOM may have investors, but they need investors just as we do… So no, no mischief. We have no intention of leaving CARICOM,” Persad-Bissessar said.

  1. The saying “a good neighbor is better than a far friend” means that someone who lives close by and is a good person can be more valuable than a friend who lives far away, especially in times of need. This is because a close neighbor is readily available to offer immediate support, while a distant friend may be inaccessible during a crisis. The concept originates from Proverbs 27:10 in the Bible, which states, “Better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off”.
Kamla should read the bible and not her Hindu Vedas, Upanishads, the epics (Mahabharata and Ramayana), and the Bhagavad Gita.

  2. Dear Kamla please know that if you will not ever be a team player it makes absolutely no sense for you to stay in CARICOM. UNITY is our STRENGHT not DIVISION. And since you wanted your way our the highway I guess you can go your way. We are not holding you against your will. But CARICOM needs to stand for something. And if CARICOM takes a position that you do not like you have the right to say so but you do not have the right to go against CARICOM’s decision. England could not agree with the rest of Europe on some of its decision and they left. BREXIT.
