Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party caretaker for Rural West, Michael Joseph, has pushed back against recent remarks by MP Richard Lewis, asserting that his work in the constituency is driven by service—not spectacle.
In a strongly worded statement on Thursday, Joseph dismissed suggestions that a recent visit to the Grays Green Community Centre site was politically motivated or exclusionary.
Instead, he described the walkthrough as a technical assessment, aimed at ensuring the long-awaited facility is fully renovated and operational in time for the September school term.
“Nothing I do for Rural West is about showmanship. It’s always about stewardship,” Joseph said. “The visit had one goal: to get the community center renovated and operational.”
Lewis, the elected United Progressive Party (UPP) MP for the constituency, had publicly questioned the nature of Joseph’s involvement in the project earlier this week, suggesting that political optics were being prioritised over inclusive governance.
Joseph, however, rejected that characterisation, stating, “I didn’t exclude anyone. But let’s be honest, you can’t call for unity in public while undermining progress in private.”
He emphasised that he has been active in the area long before “it became politically convenient to do so,” and said his commitment extends beyond party lines.
“I show up, I work, and I deliver, not just for those who support me, but for the entire constituency,” he added.
Looking ahead to the official reopening of the facility, Joseph said the centre would be guided by the needs of residents—not politicians.
“Come September 2025, Rural West will have THEIR community center opened and THEY will be the ones to decide on the programs and activities that best suit THEIR needs,” he said.
While tensions appear to be rising in the lead-up to the next general election, Joseph concluded with a call to shift focus away from political finger-pointing.
“Let’s focus less on finger-pointing and more on finishing the work our people deserve,” he said.

Richard Lewis makes a very valid point again about the “showmanship” from the highfalutin and pretentious ABLP representative for Rural West.
Anyone who knows about any long or short-term involvements in communal projects will know and understand that putting the right qualified people in place; the materials and cost effectiveness is the priority – not photo-shoots, showmanship or bragging rights over the opposition. Tarl!
Hopefully overtime, the Most Honourable Richard Lewis will lead the UPP back into power to save Antigua & Barbuda 🇦🇬

Can someone please tell or she me the work that Michael Jospeh has done in the constituency.
Michael Jospeh has not been know for anything except escaping a case against a female who he was accused of beating and kidnapping.
While he is frolicking Richard Lewis has been working in and for the constituents.
So Michael Jospeh please show me the evidence of your stewardship.
You are relatively unknown in the constituency.
You are trying to claim visibility on the shoulders of MP Richard Lewis.
There are so many issues in the constituency which needs advocacy.
I am yet to hear you championing any of them.

The UPP Supporters in the Rural West constituency are always making mountains out of old mould seeds…. Is it that they can’t see beyond their nose?
The Gray’s Green community needs developing and whoever from either political divide makes a positive proposal, it should be welcomed.
Is it going to be another case where the community will be deprived from the benefit of a positive project similarly to that of Mr. Tanny Rose (RIP) when he invited Mr. Allan Stanford into the constituency?
