Jolly Beach Severance Dispute: PM Rebuts Union’s Claims
Prime Minister Gaston Browne has rejected claims by the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union (ABWU) that it was instrumental in securing severance payments for Jolly Beach workers. During his recent appearance on Pointe FM, the Prime Minister accused the union of misrepresenting its role and taking undue credit for efforts led by his administration.
According to Browne, the government facilitated the severance payments through strategic negotiations and the partial sale of Jolly Beach properties. He emphasized that the administration acquired the entire property and later sold a portion to raise the necessary funds. “We ensured the workers were paid their severance by selling off part of the property. The union’s involvement was limited to distributing the funds, and they did so for a commission, not as an act of charity,” Browne asserted.
The Prime Minister described the ABWU’s recent statements as “opportunistic” and criticized its leadership for misleading workers. He also addressed the union’s previous handling of the workers’ gratuity fund, suggesting that its actions left employees vulnerable.
Browne highlighted his government’s commitment to the welfare of workers, noting that the administration went beyond its legal obligations to ensure fair treatment. “We are one of the most benevolent governments this country has ever seen. The severance payments were made possible because of our proactive measures, not the union’s lobbying,” he said.
