Jeremy Floyd, 19, Remanded After Guilty Plea in Modified Flare Gun Case

A 19-year-old man was left in custody after admitting to a weapons offence on Monday, as prosecutors dropped the case against three others arrested in the same police stop.

Jeremy Floyd of George Street pleaded guilty before Acting Chief Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel to possessing a modified flare gun. He was remanded until Jan. 5, when sentencing is expected.

The three remaining men — Niah Joseph, 19; Devontia Summer, 21; and Duran Benjamin, 21 — were released after the prosecution withdrew the charges against them.

Police say the four were detained during a mobile patrol on Dec. 27 after officers stopped a silver Honda Fit in the western section of the island. A search of the vehicle uncovered a modified flare gun concealed beneath a seat.

All occupants were initially charged, but only Floyd admitted responsibility.

Modified flare guns are treated as prohibited firearms under local law because they can be altered to discharge live rounds.
