Janice Samuel Emerges as Top Performer in UWI Lifelong Learning Unit Short Course for Female Prisoners

The top-performing student in the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus’s Digital Transformation of the Financial Sector course, Janice Samuel, plans to use her newfound knowledge to inspire inmates at His Majesty’s Prison, reflecting her determination to overcome challenges.

Samuel intends to share her skills within the prison system and eventually in entrepreneurial ventures upon reentering society.

Colonel Trevor Penny Feather, Superintendent of Prisons, welcomed this initiative, emphasizing the importance of rehabilitation and second chances.

Paula C. M. Lee, Executive Director of the Lifelong Learning Unit, praised Samuel and highlighted the transformative power of education in improving livelihoods and fostering innovation.

The Lifelong Learning Unit’s Seeds of Hope Programme, launched in 2021, provides scholarships to prison residents, promoting access to continuous education and professional development.

With over 120 students enrolled in Quarter 1 courses, there is a growing interest in the program, signaling a commitment to breaking down barriers to learning.

The Lifelong Learning Unit encourages working adults across the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) to enroll in 2024 professional development courses, underscoring its dedication to preparing individuals for the evolving global job market.
