Janice Hodge Awarded Nearly EC$500,000 in Unfair Dismissal Case Against State Insurance

9

Former State Insurance executive manager Janice Hodge has won an unfair dismissal case against the government-owned insurer, with the Industrial Court ordering the company to pay nearly EC$500,000 in compensation and damages.

The court ruled that Hodge’s 2023 dismissal breached principles of natural justice and found the company failed to clearly outline the misconduct she was accused of after blaming errors under her supervision for a $9.8 million restatement of financial statements.

The judgment also concluded that the discrepancy was tied largely to outdated software and internal systems rather than Hodge personally.

The court further criticized the company for applying disciplinary standards inconsistently and warned against public statements identifying employees in connection with misconduct allegations before due process is completed.

Hodge was awarded compensation for notice pay, financial losses, exemplary damages and costs, with State Insurance ordered to pay the sum in instalments by June 2026.

  1. Do not hang your hat on getting that money anytime soon.It is a Government owned entity. This Administration does not like to pay monies owed.Let us watch and see how it ends.

  2. So the action was taken by the Marijuana/Weed/Spliff lead board which said that opposotion supporters must suffer?
    So who pays that tab?
Is is the opposition, the government or everyone?

  3. Awarded nearly $500,000.00? Okay, okay I understand. You do not want to put the figure out there and I respect that totally.

Well, there is another judgment of ‘close too nearly’ $1,000.000.00 for a person who can count and he have some more to get because a certain matter is not completed.

    Then, school children say that:

    • There was a ‘settlement of nearly’ $750,000.00 to a former General Manager.

    • $400,000.00 to a person who went on vacation and his job was gone before he returned (wha can go so)?

    • $400,000.00 to supervisors who were made redundant (more monies might be coming because that matter is not completed).

Go back and check the record, I have said that in my opinion, the Board that was running that place was ‘supremely ignorant with a cook-a-hole present’ but did the person or body that put them there listen?

Right now, I am not blaming the Board that much because they are a reflection of who put them there, in my opinion.

All will fall deeper in the pit because I hear that they will be re-appointed.

If that is true, I expect much of the same (L.M.A.O.).

For those who are to get more money, I advise you to push for every damn penny.

Who na hear will feel. De damn place done mash-up already and I say that based on my twenty-three (23) years experience working there. I know. Nobady can tell me about dis one ya.

  4. Congratulations JANICE. I always knew you were innocent of the accusations. I am happy for you for never giving up.

  5. I don’t know anything about her situation, but good for her if justice was done. This happens in other places – poor resources, malfunctioning IT, but the worker gets blamed for productivity problems. Managers need to be more humane and investigate honestly and have respectful, solution-focused discussions with workers to update systems and solve problems, instead of being so quick to misjudge innocent employees.

  6. Why they have the woman’s business out there regarding the estimated amount? Just say that she won her case.

  7. Why is my earlier comment not posted. There was another judgement of the CFO as well. And he was rewarded about a million dollar. If you have a restatement of the financials statement in the amount of $9.8million. The CFO needs to account for that. He is a trained Accounting Professional and if in previous years certain liabilities were not disclosed and the shareholders were made to believe that they had a larger profit and therefore dividend was declared based on the financials. Well then the question will be asked of the competency and qualification of the CFO. State Insurance should appeal this decision and make their case at the Court of Appeal. This restatement is very much material.
