A Jamaican woman and her adult son are currently in the custody of Immigration officials in Antigua and Barbuda for breaching the country’s Passport and Immigration laws.

Sanjaye Kemar Morgan, the son, was initially detained for being in the country illegally.
However, he escaped from lawful custody around 6:00 a.m. on Sunday while being held at the immigration detention center on the Sir George Walter Highway, awaiting a court appearance.
His time on the run was brief, as authorities recaptured him a few hours later.

During the search for Morgan, Immigration officials also detained his mother, Susan Stephenson, who has been residing in Antigua and Barbuda illegally since 2020 without regularizing her status.
An immigration official warned that those who assist individuals evading immigration authorities will face the full force of the law.
Both Stephenson and Morgan are scheduled to appear in court on Monday ahead of their deportation hearings.

I want to suggest that the non regularization of immigration status is far more pronounced than thought. Some people just can’t be bothered and so they go about their lives as normal whilst not considering the renewal of their immigration status important. There must be a better way of tracking such persons down in small Antigua and Barbuda such that people are not allowed to go years living in the country illegally. There must also be stiff sanctions for persons who do not extend their time in accordance with immigration regulations.

When Antiguans arrived in the US Virgin Islands back in the 50s to 70s they had 2 weeks to get a job and an employer had to provide an employment bond which was an form of insurance that person would be gainfully employed.
No young unemployed Antigua woman or man escaped immigrants round up at 2 to 6 am every week resulting deportation which was routine.

Having said that, as an Antiguan I am disappointed with some of the comments on here regarding the Jamaicans.
