The University of the West Indies (UWI) Five Islands Campus marked a significant milestone on Friday, September 13th, as it held its annual Matriculation Ceremony for incoming students.

The event, steeped in academic tradition, officially welcomed the newest cohort of scholars to the university community.

Pro Vice-Chancellor and Campus Principal Professor C. Justin Robinson addressed the ceremony, highlighting the institution’s growth and commitment to regional development.

The ceremony was particularly noteworthy for Mr. Akeem Richards from Montserrat, who was recognized as the 2024 Top Matriculant.

Born in Jamaica and raised in Montserrat, Richards has demonstrated exceptional academic prowess and a strong commitment to community service.

He was the 2019 valedictorian at The Montserrat Community College and placed on the Caribbean Examinations Council’s (CXC) Merit List, where he was recognised as the second highest performing student in Information Technology across the entire Caribbean for CAPE IT.

He has also been involved in the community where his contributions have extended to important national projects, serving on both the National Hydrographic Coordinating Committee and the Census Mapping Committee.

Campus Registrar Dr. Camille Samuel, who chaired the ceremony, noted Richards’ achievement underscores the campus’s role in nurturing talent from across the Eastern Caribbean.

She further stated that the Five Islands Campus is rapidly becoming a crucial hub for higher education in the Eastern Caribbean with a diverse range of programs which reflects the university’s responsiveness to the region’s evolving needs, particularly in key areas such as healthcare, artificial intelligence, and sports.

The Matriculation Ceremony not only marks the beginning of these students’ academic journeys but also symbolizes the university’s ongoing commitment to shaping the future leaders and professionals in Antigua and Barbuda and the Caribbean.

The event concluded with the traditional signing of the matriculation register by new students, officially inducting the new students into The UWI community.
