SOURCE: ANTIGUA OBSERVER- “It’s not something that I can cope with,” says Nyesha Christian, her voice wavering as she spoke about the death of her 23-year-old son, Taheem Jackson, who was fatally shot in Gray’s Farm almost a month ago.
In an emotional interview with Observer media, Christian revealed the overwhelming grief that has engulfed her family since the shooting incident that occurred around 7 pm on March 29 on Christian Street.
Taking each day as it comes has become Christian’s only way forward. “It’s just every day, every day; it’s just taking it one at a time,” she explained. “It’s not easy; it’s really not easy,” she said as she mustered words to express her pain.
When asked about her son’s character, Christian’s demeanor shifted to one of protective maternal pride.
“All I know is my son has never been a problem,” she asserted firmly.
“I have seen him, he always be the one that never did anything, he never gives me problems. He works, he has friends, but he is not so much of a friend person.”
The pain of having raised a child from infancy only to lose him in such a violent way was evident as Christian continued, “It’s hard, real hard, you know,” she said, her voice breaking. “To raise your child from baby to this age, it’s really hard.”
The depth of Christian’s grief became even more apparent when she was asked if she had any advice for other parents in similar situations. After a long pause, she admitted, “I can’t answer that question, honestly … because I myself don’t even know how to cope with it, so I cannot really give any advice.”
Throughout the interview, Christian’s responses revealed a mother still processing the shock of her loss, unable to make sense of the violence that took her son’s life.
“I don’t know who has done that,” she said when asked if she knew of anyone who might have wanted to harm Taheem. Her confusion and disbelief were evident as she struggled to reconcile her understanding of how her son met his violent end.
Taheem, who worked as a steward at Cocos, was known for his friendly demeanor and dedication to his job.
He was rushed to the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, which was recorded as the 5th homicide of the year.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots and confirmed that Taheem appeared to have been shot several times during the incident.
Police are continuing their investigation into the murder as no one has yet been arrested and charged.
The authorities continue to urge anyone with information to contact the Gray’s Farm Police Station at 462-0481 or the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) at 462-3913.
