Letter to the Editor: As a Law-Abiding Citizen, I Want to Know Why
CLICK HERE TO JOIN OUR WHAT’S APP GROUP
Sir,

As a citizen of the Eastern Caribbean who has always respected U.S. immigration laws, the recent decision to impose visa bonds of up to US$15,000 on nationals of Antigua and Barbuda and Dominica feels less like a policy measure and more like a punishment — and one I do not understand.
I have never overstayed a visa. Neither have most people I know.
In fact, the United States’ own overstay reports repeatedly show that Antigua and Barbuda and Dominica rank among the lowest visa overstay rates in the region, well below countries such as Jamaica and the Dominican Republic.
So I am left asking a simple but troubling question: if we are among the most compliant, why are we being treated as high-risk?
For the average citizen, a US$15,000 bond is not a deterrent — it is a door slammed shut. It means missed family events, lost educational opportunities, business that never happens, and connections quietly severed. It tells people like me that our personal history and record no longer matter.
What makes this even more unsettling is that this decision follows closely on partial visa restrictions imposed on Antigua and Barbuda and Dominica from January 1.
When viewed together, these actions feel deliberate, not incidental. They raise an uncomfortable suspicion that this is not really about overstays at all.
So I ask, as someone who will be directly affected: is the United States sending a message to our governments? And if so, why are ordinary citizens being made the messengers?
If there are concerns about governance, diplomacy, or policies at the state level, then say so openly.
Do not quietly tighten the screws on law-abiding people while offering explanations that do not align with the facts. That approach only breeds confusion, anxiety, and mistrust.
I have always believed that compliance mattered. Today, I am being told — without explanation — that it may no longer be enough. And that is what hurts most.
Yours faithfully,
A concerned citizen

Concerned citizen is there something wrong with you? Have you been asleep since Trump came back to power? He is on a campaign to make America White and Dominant again. Simple. Wake up.
No. The US is trying to tell everyone that you don’t matter….you’re not important……AND THEY DON’T WANT YOU IN THEIR COUNTRY!!!!
Would you like them to float a banner across the sky for us?
The US does not want the Russians and Chinese trying to poke their heads over on this side of the world…..They don’t want leaders of these small countries to be in too deep in business with their enemies and illegitimate governments like Maduro’s Venezuela….We need the United Sates of America so we must not piss them off… Simple….
We should say F the US and start vacationing in China…..Who wants to go China guys!?!?! WOOHOOO!!!!! Let’s go to Ping Town and get spied on 24/7 LMAO…
If the ban and new bond requirements are racist then why ban 2 of the smallest islands and leave Jamaica and Trinidad. All the smaller islands combined has far less people than Jamaica.
The ban is obviously about more than racism.
They didn’t need to send me a message. For years I have realized and sounded, read my posts, that Antigua and Barbuda under ABLP was headed downhill. The election of Gaston with his creative enrichment focus only made bad matters worse. Our only solution to this as a first step is to get rid of the ABLP. We can then instruct our govt on how to conduct themselves.
There is no way we can tell ABLP anything; they only listen to Ron.
Stop being kids arguing about racism. This is a clear message to the Government of Antigua. A message that the one on high position on the government know and up to know are keeping the secret under the table. This is a high diplomacy issue and Antigua government isn’t handling this properly.
USA never do a move like this without a reason. Racism isn’t, Overstaying isn’t the reason neither. There is countries in our region with more black population than us, more overstaying rates than us and are not being mentioned.
The issue is more deeper and serious, and we as general public, are left abandoned without information that the actual Government cleary is hiding.
Ah true dat @Truth Seeker, Trump and the racist Caucasians like him, believe that the world belong to them. And what scares the bejesus out ah dem is the rise of rich, middle class black people who are living more successfully than them.
We must never forget what they did in the town of Tulsa Oklahoma when black professionals (famously known – before the white race riots -, as the Black Wall St), men, women and children were brutally slaughtered for being a successful black-led town.
Here’s the written evidence in the book ‘The Tulsa Race Riots of 1921’.
Beware though, it’s a harrowing retelling of the devilment in these racists people, that seems to be on rise again, but this time on a global scale.
😂.
I’m not laughing at y’all, but more so myself.
I have explained this over and over on this forum.
Y’all leader is compromised. Plain and simple. Read all my post over the past 4 years or so, and I’ve been saying this.
Intelligence gathering is not a cart and donkey show..it’s raw Surveillance, the type that makes you call someone a “peeper” here in the Caribbean.. 😂.
Again, the US have always had “dirt” on GB, and they gave him multiple opportunities to fix his greedy ways, because they knew he was not the big fish they are after, so now a message has to by sent, because these CIP breaches are not childs play.
So yes folks..the message has been sent, not directly, but indirectly.
Your PM and others are compromise, and that’s why he and the PM of Dominica has no choice put to accept ” refugees” because they both are compromised.
That’s the truth. Nothing is a fluke!
Believe it or not, but this is another chance the US is giving GB, and again at the detriment of innocent Antiguan’s.
Y’all might think that it’s about hate for black people, well it’s not so, because someone in the high places of politics in the US likes GB, otherwise his secrets would have been blasted out for all to know by the US.
The United States do not start a case unless they are willing to finish it. That’s why the FBI has a 98% incarceration rate.
And don’t even talk about the CIA..these people are sick beyond measure when it comes to getting all up in your business.
These people do not play.
So here is another olive branch for you GB, use it wisely.
Oh, and to ad to that..GB is a favorite amongst the US, and that’s why he keeps getting meetings after meetings, and that’s why he also won the ALPHA case, so don’t let him fool you with his talks.
He could be an informant for the “US” for all we know.. when you are compromised, anything is on the table.
Think people, think.
Now watch out for those (like @Smith trying to defend the indefensible), racist troupes that’ll take immense pleasure in people of colour suffering on this ANR platform.
What a sick world histor – and the present – has revealed.
We need to hear a lot more from our church leaders to call out this growth in wickedness – and urgently!
@Brixtonian: If you still believe this situation is because racism YOU ARE A DAMM KID.
What a disturbing night last night was. As I lay in bed, I pondered and thought about this visa/bond situation. This must be more than just CIP. StKitts & Nevis, St. Lucia and Grenada also have CIP but Antigua and Barbuda and Dominica are the only only ones singled out for this Visa restriction initially and now visa bond/ security deposit situation, even as we are told that our CIP always had a residency component. Of all the countries in the Caribbean, why Antigua & Barbuda and Dominica? Our situation is dire and it is clear that somebody is not leveling with us. How many Antiguans and Barbudans can afford to have USD$5000 or more tied up in the US Embassy until they return from their trip to the United States. This has literally ruled out 99.9 percent of our citizens from applying for a Visa. Our government need to level with us. Their silence is deafening.
Okay guys let’s be honest.. Donald trump is a unhinged man ..BUT” WE ANTIGUANS HAVE A VERY VERY GREEDY PRIME MINISTER and some of the ministers appointed are greedy also yes AND SO ARE THE FIRST AND SECOND LADIES .. all these characters are just putting there pockets first before the people they “ suppose to be representing”. I called the man gas-oline, because he likeS to fan THE FLAME.. let’s see what’s with HIS behavior on Facebook? Is he not representing us on a world stage ANYMORE. People abroad can see, yes Donald trump is doing stuff that no other sitting president have done but guess “What, the U.S DONT NEED US” we don’t have any oil reserves, remember how some of you’ll use to talk about guyanese? Now look them better than us now “ TEK THAT “. I’m an Antiguan and I’m sad because those people messed up our good Name with their dirty character.. we need to be the change we want to see in the world and callout Bull ish when we see or hear it, even if it’s someone we like and forget about the repercussions let’s think about our own personal values …
Well @Smith, please enlighten me and stop with your inane and fatuous s6oundbites.
I’m always a willing learner … 😉
Two scamps romanticizing their wealth together, dam dictators, they both politically control the police and army for their use against the citizenry.
@Brix.
Now slow down here my friend.
What@smith is saying in the gist of his topic is not really wrong, and he has the same point that I have made.
He is merely pointing you to the culprit in all this. This current event. Though history speaks for itself (that’s another argument) we are here today because we have a corrupt leader in Antigua, and that’s what I think Smith is pointing to, not that he’s necessarily trying to make the point about racism or abuse of black people.
But I understand the emotions, and I think he does as well. You two just calm down..we are on the same side here pertaining to this debacle that Antigua finds itself in, and it’s because of one administration or lack thereof.
@Islanman26 You are correct, There is a huge different between the speech that you hate and a hate speech. Lot of Antiguans today, and not only in Antigua, others countries are suffering this trend also, is confusing being opponent in a debate as enemies. The parties in Antigua are the fully representation of this.. UPP and ABLP are not opponents, the are behaving like pure enemies, that isn’t healthy in no way to Antigua.
Lets put aside the Racism card for a bit and focus in the real issues. I’m in the middle of ideologies over here.. I’m just seeing rockets flying from one side to the other side. At the end the result is a country going down to bankruptcy and high crime.
@smith.
Exactly. And that’s what we are to be concerned about here.
As many have noticed..I only speak harshly of GB and Cutie, because I know they have failed Antigua in their individual capacity as ministers. It’s nothing personal, and I will not apologize for that one bit.
But as a nation, we have to make the right decisions regardless of what side we are on, and if it was the UPP or any other, I’ll be right there calling them out as well.
There are many times I’ve been on here advising even Pringle to just shut up when GB is trying to lure him out.
So I’ve criticize both. My belief is to let the people see for themselves and make their own voting decisions, you don’t have to try and persuade them, they are well wise enough to know what’s going down.
Antiguan’s in general are not stupid.
But corruption is my biggest gut punch, and I’ll take the dumbest of persons over a selfish greedy one everytime.
Point well made..many can’t get over the emotions of this race thing and still stay focus..it gets them off their game easily.
And sometimes I think they also mistake prejudice for rasium. They both are not good in anyway, but both has nothing to do with why Antigua is on the US blacklist.
I’m in total agreement that Gaston Browne should be nowhere near governing this country. You only have to witness his wealth before becoming the Prime, look at his wealth 11-12 years on and its virtually quadruple. Something is amiss somewhere, and the country knows it!
I’m hoping by the time the next General Election comes around that my fellow Antiguans (if there’s enough of us, that is) will not return Gaston Browne or the ABLP to governance.
I dread what is to come if Browne retains power
Oh, and on my take of the blatant double-speak on racism:
Here’s the big difference about the rise in racism in Trump’s America (and globally) my two fellow commentators that you seem to be overlooking.
When the Jewish community calls out antisemitism, people in the wider world seem to take note, and are then silenced into submission/silence on this negative troupe. Rightly so!
However, on the other hand, when the black community calls out the same blatant intolerance, we are told to shut up be quiet. Go figure…
