SECOND STAR SAILING is announcing 2 internship positions within WOMEN @ THE HELM program. It is designed for enthusiastic Antiguan females willing to learn sailing and be closely involved in our sailing school’s day to day processes.
The 8-month internship program is developed to give the interns as much time on the water as possible – joining our RYA practical and theory courses, as well as becoming an essential part of our team on shore.
By the end of the program, the interns will gain knowledge about sailing organisation’s management, acquire practical skills on sailboat maintenance, receive RYA sailing certification, have some racing practice, and most importantly – become a member of the sailing community worldwide. After completing 8 months of the program, interns should have enough knowledge to qualify for a job in yachting industry, sufficient certification to charter a boat for holidays or work as a skipper on different sailboats.
With this program, we wish to create an inclusive environment for local community, decrease the stereotyped gender gap in the industry, and learn from each other. We hope the program will inspire local females to explore the growing sailing community in Antigua, meet likeminded women sailors, and embrace the opportunities that the program will bring along the way. May it become a new hobby, exciting career prospects in sailing, or even becoming an experienced racer in the future – we are happy to welcome you on board for your first steps!
Female candidates who can apply:
- Citizens of Antigua and Barbuda
- At least 18 years old
- Ability to swim
- None of very little experience in sailing
- Availability during working hours 1-2 days per week for shore based activities
- Availability for 5 consecutive days for sailing courses every 1-2 months
- Commitment to the whole duration of the program
Program includes:
- Practical and theory sailing training – from Competent Crew level up to Coastal Skipper RYA certification
- Everyday tasks at the School Office – assisting instructors, base managers, media coordinators
- Learning boat and sailing base maintenance
- Learning and trying crewing on charters
- Participating in local Regattas
- Participating in planning activities for the season
Second Star Sailing provides:
- Free of charge participation in following courses: Competent Crew, Day Skipper Practical, Day Skipper Theory, Coastal Skipper Practical, Coastal Skipper Theory, Mileage Builder, Powerboat Level 2, First Aid, Diesel Engine, VHF Radio, Special courses and workshops.

Second Star Sailing has been an RYA Accredited Training Centre, providing sail training courses using the prestigious British Royal Yachting Association’s certification system. WOMEN @ THE HELM is a concept created by our female instructors, focused on developing opportunities for women acquire sailing skills in a supportive and fun environment. For Decades, this mere voice in the wilderness has been exhorting GoAB, be it UPP or ABLP to revisit their Strategic Thinking and Direction on the intersection of Education, Sports, Economics, Technology, Environment and the Labour Market! As an economy heavily invested in Tourism, Yachting and the Hospitality industry, there is the undying need to create A Centre of Excellence in the Sector!
Why must Europeans be always at the forefront of our development! Why are we lacking in Creative & Strategic Thinking! The Atlantic Ocean and The Caribbean Sea are the incubators for the creation and development of our Pearls if we could only see beyond “the Beach is just the beginning!”
Antigua and Barbuda, including Redonda is blessed with one of the Largest Exclusive Economic Zones in the Eastern Caribbean. Why are we not leveraging this advantage to our eternal benefit! We do not need an “ARMY”! The Constitution does not! We need a Coast Guard, similar to Costa Rica and armed to the teeth to patrol and protect our economic, environmental, safety and security interests!
Once again, Mr. Minister of Education, Combine ABHTI, ABIIT and ASC! Call it whatever you wish but do a merger and create also a School of Faculty for Aviation and Marine Engineering!
Yes Sir Mr. Prime Minister, with the Strategic Transformation of the Army to Coast Guard and the Integration of the Tertiary Institutions, GoAB and the People of African Descent who are being plagued by youth societal issues will have an opportunity to develop A Cadet Corps to channel the idle hands and those creative and productive students, who wish, into useful educational and labour force pathways to the Hospitality, Tourism, Yachting, Fishing and Transportation – Aviation and Shipping Sectors!
Why is Antigua and Barbuda and for this matter, the English Speaking Caribbean SIDS and Africa being shut out of Global Development! In its heyday ADOMS was second only to Panama in the Caribbean! Yet we did not create a shipping company or produce a single mariner for the ships registered in our nation! Time to change that Paradigm! Carnival is knocking according to the Minister of Tourism! Will we be up to the Challenge for The High end Technical Jobs or just the hewers of wood, drawers of water and bed chambers as the former UPP Minister of Health demonstrated at the Quay and the Bus Enterprise! Take a serious look at Eastern Caribbean Shipping and Ferry Services not to mention Aviation!
From Elizabeth One to Elizabeth Two, did we not learn from the British Buccaneers and Privateers who sailed the Caribbean seizing booty from Spain, France and others as they saw fit and depositing it into the British Treasury! Captain Morgan that bloodthirsting “British Government Sanctioned Pirate” and Slave Owner was made Governor of Jamaica! Today we continue as mere observers and objects, see the same pattern of seizure (US, British, EU and NATO Sanctions and Seizures) as we continue merrily along seeking handouts with nary a peep!
