The Antigua Trades and Labour Union (AT&LU) is facing internal challenges, mirroring issues within the United Progressive Party (UPP).
A week ago, the launch of the People’s Credit Union, led by former AT&LU Industrial Relations Officers Ralph Potter and Andie Stephens, signaled a potential shift in the labor landscape. Potter emphasized that the new union would remain politically independent.
Compounding the AT&LU’s struggles, Chet Greene, Chairman of the Antigua Barbuda Labour Party, hinted at the imminent departure of General Secretary Alrick Daniel during the opening of the annual delegates conference. Greene urged Daniel to stay committed to the union’s mission, highlighting its long history of advocating for workers’ rights.

It is always very hard for more experienced and elder person to subject themselves to a very young and in-experience person. I myself was very surprise with the outcome. As this young de Nully would be about 40 years old. And I know his father having work for the offshore bank of Swiss American. And here is the connection I believe with PM Browne. Rumors therefore have it that Gaston Browne had a hand in his election to this post. As we all know, Wigley George had at one time openly run against the Labour Party in St. Paul, causing Chet to lose the election again Namba Lulu. Georg also take one of the most remarkable decision to not allow Lester and other ALP members not to speak on the platform on Labour day. The umbilical cord which has tight the Union to the ALP was about to be severed under the presidency of George. And the ALP Leadership wanted nothing of that and fought him tooth and nail. The other move that George did was to invite Ralph into the union, when it was known that Ralph was a UPP member and also a former employee of then ABWU. Soon Ralph show his teeth and worked in many occasions against the ABLP in favor of the workers he represented. I remember especially when they were negotiating the public servants salary increase, he and Gaston had it out, that Gaston had to leave the room in order to cool down. I was further told that Ralph also caused the AT & LU to lose representation of workers at Social Security. Because Ralph was in conflict with the interest of the workers and that of the Management which represent indirectly the government. I have warned Gaston on numerous time about the issued that are brewing withing the Social Security. Staff have more then once indicated they will strike. But leave that aside. Bernard relieved ralph from his post representing the workers at Social Security and therefore Ralph resigned and started his own Union. Of course he took some of the disgruntled union members with him. Because they, just like after the UPP convention, were very much perturbed with the outcome.
It would now have to take a coming together of the ABLP and AT & LU to safe the day. And only the leadership of the ABLP would be able to skillfully put out this fire before it effect the ABLP as well. Afterall the AT &LU are connect through their umbilical cord. Therefore a fire in one house can easily blow over to the other house.
