The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) reported record revenue of $671 million for fiscal year 2024, surpassing the 2023 total by $112 million.

Commissioner Ralph Warner attributed the growth to strong performance in key tax categories, including ABST, Corporate Income Tax, Travel Tax, Insurance Levy, Money Transfer Levy, and Telecommunications License.

The results reflect enhanced tax compliance and improved collection processes.

  1. The $671 million revenue for 2024 is a noteworthy achievement, and the Inland Revenue Department deserves praise for surpassing its projections. This could indicate that the economy is performing well and that businesses and individuals are complying with their tax obligations. However, it’s essential to consider whether this success comes at the expense of smaller businesses or lower-income individuals who may be disproportionately affected by tax burdens. A more progressive tax system that takes into account the challenges faced by different sectors could help create a more balanced financial environment.

  2. Transparency in how the revenue is used to improve public services will ensure that the public remains confident in how their taxes are being spent.

  3. With all the revenue surpassing of expected projections with inland revenue, customs duties, tourist ships, visitors and yet the roads aren’t fixed and maintained properly; water isn’t being provided daily and consistently; electricity always going out; govt buildings not being up kept and made safe to occupy. Where is all this revenue going? Other than the obvious not for upgrading and updating the country’s infrastructure.

Seems like those in power are in the business of pilfering funds that rightfully belong to the nation and its citizens. I’ll even add that everything is top heavy; unnecessary positions are being created adding to the draining of the revenue.

This govt has zero transparency yet the voters don’t seem to care. So long as they get their Christmas “gifts” and almost “free” concerts they are ok with that. This is the society we have today. No priorities whatsoever. It’s no wonder crime is so high here.

One day people will understand that the govt works for us, the citizens, not the other way around. Until then, this nation will continue heading south.
