Injured Dog Rescued After 12 Hours in Ditch on DeSouza Road
An injured dog, hit by a car on DeSouza Road at 8:00 PM the previous evening, was rescued after spending 12 hours in a ditch. The incident was brought to light by Joy Farrell in the Dogs and Cats of Antigua discussion group, where she shared the dog’s plight and the rescue efforts that followed.
Describing the dog’s condition, Farrell reported that the animal was in excruciating pain, screaming when attempts were made to lift him. Local rescuer Oreo responded to the call for help, and together they managed to transport the dog to safety in Farrell’s car.
Veterinarian Fiona assessed the dog’s injuries, identifying a broken rib, spinal cord damage, and a severely swollen back leg. Despite the grim prognosis, the team expressed hope. Thanks to a partnership with new rescue organizations enabling the relocation of adult dogs, Fiona plans to keep the dog confined for six weeks to monitor his recovery progress.
The rescue effort underscores the ongoing challenges faced by animal welfare groups in Antigua. Dedicated volunteers like those from Dogs and Cats of Antigua continue to advocate for better awareness and care for injured and abandoned animals.
Updates on the dog’s recovery will be shared as the rescue group monitors his condition.
