Indian community celebrates 77th Republic Day

Indian nationals living in Antigua and Barbuda have marked the 77th anniversary of India’s Republic Day with a ceremony highlighting democratic values, unity and cultural heritage.

The observance brought together members of the Indian diaspora, friends of India and invited guests for a flag-hoisting ceremony and reflections on the significance of the day.

Republic Day, celebrated annually on 26 January, commemorates the adoption of India’s Constitution in 1950, establishing the country as a sovereign, democratic republic.

Speaking at the event, India’s High Commissioner to Jamaica, Ambassador R. Masakui, reflected on the importance of the occasion, describing Republic Day as a moment to honour the sacrifices made during India’s struggle for independence and to reaffirm the principles of democracy, equality and the rule of law.

Earlier messages from Indian leaders were also referenced, including remarks from President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who highlighted the enduring strength of India’s democratic institutions and the country’s progress since independence.

Ambassador Masakui also acknowledged the contributions of the Indian diaspora in Antigua and Barbuda, noting their role in strengthening social, cultural and economic ties between the two countries.

He encouraged members of the community to continue acting as bridges between India and Antigua and Barbuda, fostering cooperation, mutual respect and shared development.

India and Antigua and Barbuda have maintained friendly relations, supported by people-to-people links, educational exchanges and growing diplomatic engagement.

Republic Day celebrations by Indian communities around the world are seen as an opportunity not only to honour national history, but also to reaffirm shared values within host societies.
