POINT XPRESS- Indian Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles, Pabitra Margherita, who concluded a brief visit to Antigua and Barbuda on Tuesday, emphasized the importance of simplifying travel between his country and St. John’s.
Speaking at a reception in his honor on Monday night, attended by government officials, members of the Indian diaspora, and students who received Indian scholarships, Margherita highlighted the value of enhancing people-to-people connections to strengthen bilateral relations.
He proposed easing visa procedures and facilitating mobility partnerships to remove travel-related procedural hurdles between the two countries. “We look forward to working closely with the Government of Antigua and Barbuda towards this end, providing further impetus to tourism, trade, and people-to-people partnerships,” he stated.
Margherita expressed confidence that the friendly relations between the people of India and Antigua and Barbuda would continue to flourish. He also recalled the historical migration of Indians to the Caribbean during British colonial rule, where they worked on sugar plantations and contributed to the region’s unique blend of cultures.
“This is a symbol of unity in diversity, as we see Indian influence in the cuisine, music, and other cultural aspects that define the Caribbean as a melting pot of different civilizations,” Margherita said.
He further noted the shared passion for cricket, which serves as another link between the two nations.
Margherita acknowledged the admiration Indians have for West Indian cricket legends such as Sir Vivian Richards, Sir Andy Roberts, Sir Richie Richardson, Sir Curtly Ambrose, and Courtney Walsh. Sir Curtly, Sir Andy, and Walsh were in attendance at the reception.

Something is inherently wrong with us as a people
Its a shame, the same people that want to economically dominate us are allowed to live and earn in our countries, while we cannot travel in peace ti their countries, and the blessed leaders are in bed with them to economically disenfranchise us
Go ahead and open the FLOOD GATES to those cultures that view us as their subservients with their classism and racism. The Trinidadians and Guyanese people of African decent are still viewed as their subservients even after hundreds of years, of living amongst each other. Our government led by the Gaston Browne administration is looking for cheap labour to assist with the colonization of Barbuda for Billionaires styled Dubai social clubs.
