Festivals Minister Daryl Matthew has announced that the Independence Calypso competition will return to Antigua and Barbuda’s cultural calendar.
Speaking at Wednesday’s Carnival awards ceremony, Matthew said the event’s revival is intended to boost national pride and foster a sense of unity. He urged calypsonians to produce music that celebrates Antiguan and Barbudan identity, describing the season as an opportunity to put political differences aside and embrace patriotic spirit.
The competition will be organised by the Calypso committee, with all performers invited to take part. It was last staged in 2020 as a virtual event due to pandemic restrictions, when Leston “King Young Destroyer” Jacobs won the title with All Hands on Deck. Peetron Thomas placed second with Paradise, and Glenroy “Epic Byke” Joseph took third for National Pride.

I sincerely fo hope that as the independence calypso competition makes it return you make your exit from our political stage.
You are the worst three port folio minister ever in Antigua’s history.
You are the worst education minister in Antigua’s history.
You are the worst sports minister since elected politics in Antigua.
You are throwing worst minister of culture since the day the term was first written.
Please walk quickly before the doors hit you as you exit our politics.
By the way, Lovell is back.
He wants winners.
Jermaine may very will be your opponent.
If she is she will take off your clothes.
Not for what you ministers in the labour camp are always after and exploiting the young girls.
She will strip you so that your incompetence is exposed.
