Very sad indeed and it points to a level of ignorance and immaturity in the country. We take someone’s unfortunate sickness as fun and joke. The lack of proper education as it pertains to mental health prevents many of us from acknowledging the signs and symptoms of those who might be affected and seeking help for them instead of making fun. I think that the stigma attached to mental health is damaging how we treat with people who are so affected. Statistics indicate that roughly one in every 5 persons suffers from some sort of mental issue so many who are walking the streets and looking normal are really in need of assessment and care.
Well said! I would add however that it’s not only those walking the streets that have mental challenges. There are innumerable persons who appear well off and normal on the outside yet harbour and mask serious mental issues internally. Mental illness does not discriminate!!
When I heard serpent dismissed that it wasn’t him and eliminated his other colleagues, I immediately thought that this was classless for such a serious subject to be trivialized the way it was being discussed. It sounded like the person had committed a crime. It was disgusting to hear him speak as if he was on Observer Radio in a quarrel with the ABLP. That was so classless and shows you that while it is one’s right and a noble gesture to be a public servant at the highest order, more is required once you enter the arena.
Doing a process of elimination by saying it’s not on the Opposition’s side, only leads to greater speculation and by even saying he hasn’t spoken the Asot, so he doesn’t know, that too was very inappropriate and helped to drive the conversation for further speculation.
I’m glad Ms. Imhoff responded with class and respect for the privacy of person and their families.
Sometimes small island thinking even from Politicians can be proven a true a stereotype, one I detest, suggesting that because I am from a small island I cannot dare to think big or in this case, think smart or intelligently. Serpent just qualified the stereotype about himself.
Thanks Ms Imhoff for bringing some maturity to this matter. I hope we become a nation who loves mankind more than politics.
Gaston Browne is the biggest violator of ethics and your are a team member whenever he’s on his ver frequent
ethics and good- character demolition show. Have you ever called him out? I’m not sure and I doubt it, because you usually chuckle in agreement. You are nothing but hypocrisy on display.
Serpent is a CLASSLESS person. He should be thrown in DUST BIN. Thanks Ms.Imhoff.
Sometimes I think the term “mental illness” is just used as an excuse to absolve oppressive people of the effects of their actions on other people. People treat another person badly and when the person gets stressed out and tries to cope in an unhealthy manner, they are accused of having a “mental illness”. Then perhaps they are made to take some questionable mind-altering medication that studies show to be largely ineffective or carted off somewhere and made to shut up about their perceived problems. If our Christian society truly practiced the love that Jesus taught us to have for one another then there would probably be fewer people in extreme distress and labelled in such a way. Society needs to fix the underlying causes of people’s distress, not just attach labels to people.
