PM Browne: Illegal Parking Crackdown Coming

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has warned that stronger enforcement measures are on the way to tackle illegal parking and abandoned vehicles obstructing public roads.

“We’re going to start enforcing the laws,” Browne said.

The Prime Minister also raised concerns over derelict vehicles left on roadsides, particularly those linked to unauthorized mechanic shops. He said authorities will begin towing abandoned cars and relocating makeshift garages operating on public land.

“There’s a gentleman there on Rohan Henry Street. Our government gave him two acres of land at Paynters to put his old vehicles, and he cleaned up the place nicely,” Browne said.

“Now we have others blocking the roads, and if they don’t move voluntarily, we will clean it up for them—and they won’t like it.”

He said police have been instructed to act against vehicles that remain parked illegally for extended periods.

“We have asked law enforcement to mark those vehicles and have them removed,” he stated.

Browne also expressed frustration with those who use public spaces as free storage for broken-down cars.

“Owners who allow mechanics to fix their cars on the roadside and leave them there, blocking traffic, may have to go and collect them at Cooks,” he said, referring to the country’s landfill.

The government is also exploring the use of vehicle clamps as an enforcement tool, particularly for repeat offenders.

“We have to start stepping up because we’ve been too lenient, and people are becoming more and more indisciplined,” Browne added.

He said the ultimate goal is to restore order on the roads and ensure that public spaces remain accessible for all.

  1. Excellent work Mr. PM, we commend you greatly for this decision and hope you follow through on this one.
For the parking, hope the police responsible for these clamps exercise their God given conscience and commonsense when applying these clamps and be aware of delivery vans and trucks who park temporary for loading and offloading. Some of these rookie police officers don’t even ask questions, they just appear and issue parking tickets and can’t even spell properly, its a shame smh…….they are young I know but at least be courteous, some of them talk to you like a pig, as if they are exempted from the law. The law did not exempt them, we are all expected to abide by the laws of the land, so please Mr. PM, implement some sort of training for these your police officers who in the traffic depertment on our streets. I will begin to take their badge numbers and place them right here.

  2. Kudos to the authorities for finally stepping in. Resident are tired. While this mission is underway, can we also address the parking in residential areas and obstruction driveways, these offenses are also getting out of hand and the duty traffic officer seems bothered when a call is placed which takes hours before the owner has been told to move. What do we propose we do here?

  3. Yes he came to Paynters and has been blocking the roads up there and making the place look nasty. The residents are disgruntled. I guess you don’t have to see Paynters so you don’t have to care

  4. I fully endorse the enforcement of this law relating to illegal parking. HOWEVER, the Government needs to UNDERSTAND that denying parking space to residents in order to facilitate/reserve parking space for taxis on tourist days (everyday!) without providing a satisfactiry alternative, on any alternatuve at all!, is a kettle reaching just about boiling point! Government has yet to provide a long promised, election promise of meter-maids!!! The Police are among the greatest offenders when it comes to breaking traffic rules. Just take a look at what obtains on Church and Long Streets respectively, just outside the St. John’s Police Station!!!. Get real!
