The government has initiated a selective deployment of air conditioning units in schools, focusing on those with the greatest need for improved climate control.
Government spokesman Lionel ‘Max’ Hurst provided an update on the strategy, emphasizing that not all schools will be outfitted with these units.
“Air conditioners are deployed, but I don’t think that all schools are going to be matched with air conditioners,” Hurst stated. He explained that only classrooms in specific schools, particularly those where airflow is inadequate, will receive the units. “Those schools and those classrooms in those schools, that seemingly for one reason maybe the airflow or something is not as it ought to be, they will have the air conditioners assigned to them,” Hurst added.

The government’s approach aims to prioritize the hottest and most uncomfortable classrooms, ensuring that resources are allocated where they are most needed. This targeted deployment strategy addresses the immediate need for better learning environments in select schools while managing costs and resources effectively.
Regarding the energy efficiency of the air conditioning units, Hurst assured that the government is deploying high-efficiency models to minimize operational costs.
“These are units that are designed to consume as little electricity as is necessary,” he explained. The focus on energy efficiency is particularly important for low-income and vulnerable families who might be concerned about the cost of running these units.
Hurst highlighted the government’s careful consideration of the elderly and others with specific health needs, noting that efficient air conditioning can be crucial during extremely hot days. “We want to ensure that no one loses his or her life unnecessarily if an air conditioning unit can help to save their lives,” he emphasized.

While acknowledging that there will be some cost associated with using the air conditioning units, Hurst reassured the public that the units have been selected for their minimal electricity consumption.

“There is going to be some cost attached to its use without a doubt, but the question is will it be reasonable. These units will consume very little electricity but will bring us great comfort,” he affirmed.
