Hurricane Nigel Strengthens, Rip Currents expected to affect Bermuda

NHC – At 5:00 PM AST on September 19, 2023, the National Hurricane Center reported that Hurricane Nigel had strengthened, with its eye located at 31.8°N and 54.7°W, approximately 590 miles (955 km) east of Bermuda.

Nigel is moving at 14 mph (22 km/h) towards the north-northwest and is expected to turn north, followed by an acceleration to the northeast.

Maximum sustained winds have reached 100 mph (155 km/h), with the potential for further strengthening until early Wednesday.

Weakening is anticipated on Thursday and Friday, with Nigel becoming a strong post-tropical cyclone by Friday.

Hazardous surf and rip current conditions are expected to affect Bermuda in the coming days.

No coastal watches or warnings are currently in effect.
