Hurricane Nigel Set to Intensify into Major Hurricane, not Expected to Affect Caribbean Islands

NHC – In the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Nigel is expected to undergo rapid intensification and become a major hurricane by Tuesday.

As of 1100 AM AST, Nigel’s center was situated at latitude 27.2 North and longitude 51.4 West, about 875 miles east-southeast of Bermuda.

The storm is currently moving northwest at 12 mph, with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph.

While there are currently no coastal watches or warnings in effect, Nigel’s path is expected to take a northward turn late Tuesday, followed by acceleration northeastward throughout the week.

Hurricane-force winds extend up to 25 miles from the center, with tropical-storm-force winds reaching up to 160 miles.

Though there are no immediate hazards affecting land, residents and authorities are advised to stay updated on the storm’s progress.
