Hurricane Melissa Threatens Caribbean with Widespread Flooding and Strong Winds
Hurricane Melissa continues to churn over eastern Cuba and is expected to emerge into the southwestern Atlantic, bringing destructive winds, heavy rainfall, and dangerous storm surges across several Caribbean nations, the National Hurricane Center has warned.
The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued its latest advisory at 5:00 am local time on Wednesday, highlighting the severe threat posed by the Category 5 storm.
Jamaica
Authorities have urged residents to remain sheltered in the wake of the storm, warning of downed power lines, flooding, and other hazards. Safety advice includes proper ventilation for generators placed at least 20 feet from dwellings to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Clean-up operations should be conducted with caution, particularly when using chainsaws or other power tools, and residents are advised to stay hydrated to avoid heat-related illness.
Haiti and the Dominican Republic
The two nations face catastrophic flash flooding and landslides, with communities in Haiti likely to become isolated due to extensive damage. Tropical storm conditions are expected to persist through Wednesday morning.
Eastern Cuba
Life-threatening storm surges, flash floods, and landslides are ongoing, with hurricane-force winds reported in affected areas. Residents are being urged to remain in secure shelters until the storm passes.
Bahamas and Turks and Caicos
Hurricane conditions are expected across the southeastern and central Bahamas, including dangerous storm surges and heavy rainfall. Tropical storm conditions, significant rainfall, and storm surge are also forecast for the Turks and Caicos Islands. Authorities have stressed the importance of following local guidance and finding safe shelter.
Bermuda
Although further from the storm’s centre, Bermuda could experience hurricane conditions and heavy rainfall starting Thursday or Thursday night.
NOAA forecasters emphasised that Hurricane Melissa remains a significant threat across the Caribbean, and residents in affected areas are advised to take all necessary precautions.
