The Human Resource Professionals of Antigua and Barbuda (HRPAB) are organising a mental wellness retreat to help participants reset and refocus amid today’s high-pressure work environments.
The event, titled “Just Breathe: Finding Your Anchor,” will take place on 28 June at Blue Waters Hotel from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Wendy Jackson-DeSouza, HRPAB President, said the retreat responds to the growing demands on HR professionals and others feeling overwhelmed.
“Sometimes HR is taken for granted,” she told a recent televised segment. “This retreat reminds participants that everyone has individual needs and challenges.”
Mental health advocate Monifah St. John, a speaker at the event, stressed the importance of HR leading mental health efforts in the workplace.
The retreat will explore themes such as emotional boundaries, compassion fatigue and personal wellness. It is open to HR members and the public, with fees of EC$150 for members and EC$175 for non-members, which includes refreshments and access to all activities.
Those interested can register by phone at 779-8289 or 728-8990, or by email at [email protected]. Attendees are advised to wear comfortable clothing suitable for interactive sessions.
Jackson-DeSouza described the event as “more than a retreat. It’s a reset button — a chance to find your anchor and strength.”

Now dis is something we need more of — peace of mind hard to come by these days.
Me love this theme — “Find Your Anchor.”
Too much stress out here. A retreat like this can really help people breathe again.
Finally, people talking ‘bout mental wellness without shame.
A retreat fi ease ya mind and heart? Me deh pon dat.
If we nah take care of the mind, everything else fall apart.
It’ll be interesting to see how this cascades to the minimum wage workers whom HR managers care for, whose businesses always want more from, with no recompense.
I bet most of these staff would advise a decent pay rise would ease their mental & emotional stress then they’ll talk about breathing & anchoring.
Hmm, HR in organizations, if they exist, should definitely consider how to implement workplace policies that enable people to breathe more easily. Consider everything such as good infrastructure, availability of equipment, consultation with stakeholder workers before decisions are made, respectful dialogue with workers as team members working towards shared objectives as opposed to top to bottom directives only, sensible workplace activities and events that align with the celebrations in the national calender, understanding and reasonable accommodation of family commitments etc., fair evaluation processes taking into account both the positive contributions and negative interactions with the worker with fair weighting being applied to each event, budgeting resources needed for getting daily tasks completed at work more highly than budget allocations for parties and cheap freebies, and ensuring salaries keep up with local cost of living expenses.
