Household waste suspected as cause of fish kill at Darkwood Pond

Dr. Linroy Christian, the Director of Analytical Services, said last month’s fish kill at Darkwood Pond was likely caused by wastewater from homes.

“I think it’s kitchen waste or whatever but those are nutrients going into the environment and therefore it gets into the waterways. It gets into our water bodies and algae start to proliferate, oxygen content drops”, he told state media.

Hundreds of dead fish were seen floating in the pond in late May and subsequent tests reportedly revealed abnormal nutritional values.

“We did site visits with the veterinary division to rule out some of these sources, we have to then do further investigations quite likely with the Central Board of Health to see if there’re any other domestic sources before we conclude”, Dr. Christian explained.

Low oxygen levels and an increase in algae bloom were also revealed as the contributing factors when there was a similar occurrence in June of 2019.

  1. No doc. It is not kitchen waste.

There are some Jamaicans who use the dogwood plant to catch fish around Antigua. If you do not know what you’re doing you can cause fish kill.
You leave the bark in water and it stuns the fish and you can literally pick them up with your hand. Seems as if an amateur left the dogwood in the water for too long and killed the fish.
    The practice should be banned.
