Hotel groups in Antigua and Barbuda are implementing measures to minimize the risk of transmission as they prepare to welcome guests back to their properties once the borders are opened and they are given the green light.

Last Saturday, Minister of Tourism and Investment, Hon Charles Fernandez and Permanent secretary, Walter Christopher visited the Hammock Cove Resort and Spa and met with Resort Manager, Rosario Soler who was able to give an update about the preventative measures to be implemented to minimize the spread of Covid-19.

According to Soler, the Elite Island Resorts is working on an efficient prevention plan as health and safety hazards in hotels cannot be ignored. She said many ideas have come up such as providing guests with face masks and a disinfectant kit in their rooms, social-distanced dining and taking reservations for lunch and dinner to limit how many persons are in the dining room at a time as well as scheduling activities at different times during the week so that all their guests can participate.

The temperature of all frontline staff at all of the Elite Island Resorts will be checked daily upon arrival to work, they will also mandatorily adhere to the protocols implemented by the Ministry of Health. Facilities are in place for employees to change into their uniform upon arrival to work and shower upon leaving.

Soler said while the coronavirus continues to impact the hotel industry, before they begin to welcome guests back to the property, they will ensure that every room, dining area, bar, the pools, spa and gym will be cleaned and sanitized by the staff that has been kept on to see to the property’s daily maintenance and upkeep.

“We are depending on the Ministries of Health and Tourism to provide us with additional protocols to help us get all of Elite Island Resorts in a state of readiness”, she said.

All properties will be inspected by a certification team to be comprised of officials from the Ministries of Health and Tourism before they can officially open for business.

  1. Oh what about the pools that everyone uses some nasty persons pee in the pool and from what I’ve read this deadly covid can be spread through semen urine tears salive etc. Will the chlorine kill the infection? Please look into this as well please and tonxs

    • The pools contain chlorine which kills all germs. Yes even sperm. The hotels will ensure that its at the right level and this is doe automatically via things like chlorine generators. Think you may recall the US prez suggesting we inject chlorine in persons to kill Covid? Where the pools are concerned no need to take such a drastic move, just needed in the pool water.

  2. If the hotels can prevent covid19 transmission then there is no need for a flu shot.

The hotels should transition into a new business and sell their techniques. Not to sure if the pharmaceutical industry will be pleased.

A false sense of security can be deadly.

As the PM said we just have to live with it….. By the way what has become of influenza? Has anybody seen her lately?

Seems as if covid killed her and take her position, Mr Pompey please investigate this crime because influenza was meek and mild.

  3. PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT WAS SAID….

THE STAFF TEMPERATURE WILL BE TAKEN DAILY UPON ARRIVAL AT WORK….. NOT THE GUEST

SO YOU SEE WHO HAS THE PROBLEM? I THOUGHT COVID19 WAS IMPORTED…….

NOTICE IT IS ONLY THE FRONT LINE STAFF WILL BE CHECKED…..THE WHITE MANAGERS FROM OVERSEAS WILL NOT BE CHECKED.

THIS IS HAPPENING IN ANTIGUA WOW…..CANNOT BELIEVE WHAT I JUST READ….

    • Why are you shouting (CAPS)?The white managers (for the hotels who have) tend to live on property. They also tend not to interact with guests as much as front line staff. The check is just an pre-caution, just in case. Note also that back of the house staff (eg accounts, stores, cost control, purchasing department, IT department) tend not to interact with guests, hence as you see they were not listed for temperature checks. The guest will be screened via covid tests at their home port before arriving here

      • @getthefacts
Will a separate bus carry the back of the house staff?

Will back of the house staff interact with front of the house staff?

A lot of these tourists just come with some horrible sounding coughs.

How will the test at home port be verified? What safety features will be on the health certificate?
We need protection from the tourist also….
